Mt. Fugen is the part of Unzen Amakusa National Park and erupted
for the first time in 200 years in November 1990, through a new
opening in the mountain’s flank.
In April, 1998 seven years after the eruption, the path up the mountain through Kunimiwakare to Momijichaya was finally reopened to the public.
Mt.Fugen is a beautifully-shaped peak in the Unzen Mountains, and now climber can see the Heisei Shinzan ( lava dome ) close at hand.
