Aso region

 

Aso region is one of the most popular tourist destination in Kyushu.

The world’s largest caldera and the active volcano give a lot of excitements.

And numerous unforgettable experiences in the rural area can be mede including Onsen,

Mount Aso

 

Mount Aso, is the largest active volcano in Japan, and is among the largest in the world.

Its peak is 1592 m above sea level. Its caldera is 25 km across north to south and 18 km 

across east to west.

The caldera has a circumference of around 120 km, although sources vary on the exact distance.

 

The central cone group of Aso consists of five mountains: Mt.Naka, Mt.Neko, Mt.Taka, Mt. Eboshi,

and Mt.Kishima.  Last major eruption of Mt. Naka was in 1993.

Daikanbo

 

Daikanbo is a perfect spot view the five peak of Mt. Aso (Aso Gogaku), and is a Mecca for tourists

visiting Aso. Daikanbo literally means a big observatory peak.

The circumference of the Aso caldera is about 130 kilometers. From the observation site, you can

clearly see its conical shape.
Early in the morning, the clouds had spread out below us, and hung over the caldera as if they

were a large sea.

Aso Tourist Tram

 

Aso Tourist Tram, the train ride starts with a great view from the first bridge pier at Shirakawa, 

60 meters above the gorge.

 

This location is also famous for having the longest station name in Japan; Minamiaso Nizuno
Umareru Sato Shiramizu Kogen Station.

There are many sites of interest along with the rail line in Aso region.

 

Choyo Station has only station building on the line dating from before the JR privatization.
There are also spa facilities at the Aso Shimodajo Fureai Onsen Station and attractive wooden
building at the Takamori Station.

Operating schedule

The tram operates from March to late November on Saturday, Sunday, and holidays.
It makes two daily round trips between Tateno and Takamori.
It operates daily, however, during the scholastic spring and summer vacations and week-long
holidays in May.
 

Reservations are accepted 10 day prior to boarding at the Takamori Station.

There is also regular daily train service on this route.

Kusasenri-ga-hama

 

Kusasenri-ga-hama is the beautiful prairie of 785,000 square meter in the

crater which spreads in northern part of Mt. Eboshi that is one of the Aso Five Mountains.

Nabegataki Watarfall

 

Nabegataki Waterfall is a hidden tourist spot in Kumamoto prefecture, located just outside

Oguni town in Aso region.

 

One of the area’s more well-known waterfalls. Looking like a mini-Niagara.

 

It is very unique waterfalls, you can actually climb behind the falls to see how the water has

carved out the rock over the year.

Aso Shrine

 

Aso Shrine is popular as a god protecting worshipers from trafficaccidents, and exorcism,

marriae, and learning.

Aso shrine one of the oldest and most prominent shrines in Japan, and was built in 281 before

accession of the 1st Emperor Jinmu.

 

The shrine is located in the center of the caldera of Mt. Aso and the caldera is known as
the largest in the world in which people are actually living.

Shirakawa suigen

 

Shirakawa suigen is the fountainhead of Shirakawa river that is one of the first class

rivers of Japan.

 

 The quantity of water that spouts with the sand at the bottom of the pond is approximately

60 tons per minute.

Issingyo big cherry tree

 

Issingyo big cherry tree located in the caldera of Mount Aso and provide one of the most

beautiful cherry blossoms in Kyushu.

 

The overview of the tree

 Age : 400 years, height : 35m, branch tension: 26m

 

Best season to see beautiful cherry blossoms is at the end of March to in the middle of April.

Sensui-kyo ravine

 

Sensui-kyo is the ravine located in a place with an altitude of 900m of the foot in Mout Aso

Nakadake, where a dynamic view of the Aso valley and northern part of Aso Caldera can look 

down under their view. 

 

Along with Unzen and the Kirishima plateau, Sensui-kyo is one of the most beautiful places

of azalea in Kyushu; about 50,000 shares of azaleas dye whole area pink from the middle of

May to the beginning of June.
