Beppu (別府)

 

Beppu is a popular hot spring town nestle at the foot of volcanos, Mt. Yufu

and Mt. Tsurumi.

Boasting more than 2,800 hot spring sources and flowing rate of nearly
137,000 kiloliters per day, Beppu is considered a paradise of hot springs
famous for high therapeutic effects.
The town is divided into eight major hot spring areas collectively called 
Beppu Hatto”, which offer beautiful scenery and various type of water of
different qualities.

 

What to do

 

Hell tour 

The most famous sights are Jigoku Meguri or (Burning Hell)  tour.  
A collection of hot springs where the water bubbles 
forth from underground, often with unusual result. more


 

Foot bath 

Foot bath is called Ashiyu in Japanese and is a public bath in 
which people can bath their feet. Ashiyu in Beppu set up at 
Kannawa Onsen near the Hell tour spot. You can easily enjoy 
it without having to remove all your clothing, only the feet and 
leg up to the knee are immersed.  more

 

Where to explore


Kannawa Onsen

With numerous jets of white steam emitting from gushing hot 
springs, this area is a must see destination for Beppu 
sightseers. Charming shops and Ryokan (Japanese inn) are 
tucked along the narrow and winding streets. It is also known 
for steam baths.

 

Myoban Onsen

On the hill facing Beppu Bay, is a small, quiet mountain resort. 
Visitors enjoy several types of thermals such as mud bath or 
milky water bath accompanied by a distinctive sulphuric odor. 
Mineral deposits are worked at the thatched Yunohana-goya.

 

Hyotan Onsen

The public bath where you can enjoy various type of bathes 
and is located in Kannawa district in Beppu.

The waters of this Onsen contain sodium chloride which is 
effective for neuralgia and women’s diseases.

Takasaki mountain animal park

Located on the boundary line of Oita-city and Beppu-city is 
an area populated by wild Japanese monkies.
The park was opened in 1953,and is now home to about 
1700 wild Japanese
monkies.

Beppu Tower

A famous landmark in Beppu-city; there are discount shops 
on the 1st floor, there is a viewing lounge on the 16th floor 
and there is an observatory which overlooks Beppu-city 
on the 17th floor.

Unzen Onsen

 

Unzen Onsen 

Unzen Onsen is located in the Unzen National Park, at the 
southwest part  of Mt. Fugen with an altitude of 700m.

 

It is started receiving foreign tourists around the year 1900 
when Kaempfer and Siebold introduced the city to Europe 
and China.


Characteristics

The hot springs of Unzen is characterized by its sulfurous hot water with high
acidity (pH: 2.0 – 2.2), which is uniquely high comparing to hot springs in Europe 
where the hot springs treatment is actively performed.
The temperature of the hot springs of Unzen is as hot as around 90 Degree Celsius. 
Unzen hot springs is known by its component of hot water such as “acid hydrogen
sulfide springs”, “aluminiferous springs including hydrogen sulfide” or “ferrous salfate springs” 
but it is generally called  “sulfurous hot springs.

 

Efficacy

The hot springs of Unzen is highly effective in sterilization because of its acidity.
It takes effect against skin diseases in general such as eczema, chilblain, incisures, 
and other skin related problems. It is also noted that the Unzen hot spring is effective
to facial treatment as well as effective against chronic rheumatism, diabetes,
neuralgic pain, muscle pain, joint pain, and fatigue with health-promoting benefits.

 

 

Hyotan Onsen

 

Hyotan Onsen is a public bath where you can enjoy various 
type of bathes and is located in Kannawa district in Beppu.

The waters of this Onsen contain sodium chloride which is 
effective for neuralgia and women’s diseases.


 

There are Outdoor bathes, Hyotan bath, Waterfall bath, 
Steam bath and Sand bath.
You can also enjoy meals at the restaurant; local specialty 
cuisine Dangojiru, or food steamed with the steam from 
hot spring.

 

Kurokawa Onsen (黒川温泉)

 

Kurokawa Onsen is one of the most popular hot spring resort,

located on the northern side of  Mt. Aso .


Widely known for its open-air baths, it is one of the best places to enjoy the atmosphere of old town in Japan, where more than 20 inns
Ryokan
and gift shops standing in a row along the Tanoharu River, a headstream of 
the Chikugo River.

 

Onsen Tegata

With an “Onsen Tegata”, a pass made of cedar, travelers can 
make the rounds of three different open-air Onsen.

Shitan-yu

 

Shitan-yu is the old public outdoor bath with a thatched 
roof beside Kinrinko lake in Yufuin.


The bathing here is mixed, as baths often were before the 
arrival, during the Meiji period ( 1869 – 1912), of American 
and Europeans who shames the Japanese into segregating 
their baths.
