Kyushu Travel Guide

Hirotani Wetland

 

It is the only wetland in Fukuoka Prefecture,

 

Located 600 meters west from Seiryu Cave and 2,500 m east from Hiraodai Nature 

Observation Center. The wetland is an important part of Hiraodai Karst landform,

offering a variety of wetland plant life such as the Sagiso (rein orchis), Tokiso (pogonia), and 

Nohanasyobu (iris).

Mejiro Limestone Cave

 

It is the longest cave in Hiraodai Karst, over 2 km in length.

The highlight of this cave is the monolithic ceiling which is a very unique structure as a

limestone caves.

Ojika Limestone Cave

 

The cave is called footfall of dinosaurs

 

It is the very rare cave in Japan; the entrance is vertical pit with 25 meter, when getting

down to the bottom, you follow the underground horizontal cave and you can see the hidden

aspects of Hiraodai Karst.

Senbutsu Limestone Cave

 

The largest limestone caves in Hiraodai Karst Plateau

extending about 900 m while meandering toward the northeast.

 

Senbutsu Literally means 1,000 Buddha Cave and  the shape of the cave is narrow.

The narrow ceiling ravine with a maximum width of 10 m and a maximum ceiling

height of 15 m.

 

Approximately 30 large and small stalactites hang down at the entrance, giving a spectacular scenery.

Abundant groundwater still continues to erode in the cave.

Hibikinada Biotope

 

Japan’s largest Biotope

 

The Pradise of creatures made over the year in the waste disposal site.   

237 kind of birds including circus spinouts listed on the Japan’s endangered species and 284 kind

of vegetation have been confirmed in the Biotope of 41 hectares.

Based on the “Law for Recycling of Containers and Packaging,” plastic (PET: polyethylene

terephthalate) bottles are sorted by municipalities and recycled into pellets/flakes, which can

be used as raw materials for polyester fibers, egg cartons.

Environmental Museum of Water

 

The learning facility of the water environment

 

The Museum was established along the Murasaki River.  

You can see and feel the Nature from the view point of fishes, birds and insects at the

experience corner.

There are ecology tanks, you can learn about the river and the environment in Kitakyushu-city.

And also there is the huge River observation window with 2.3 metre high and 7.2 metre wide,

You can observe River creatures and fishes as well as Seawater fishes.

Kitakyushu Firefly Museum

 

The learning facility for ecology of Firefly

 

The activities for protecting fireflies have been continued for over 30 years by citizens

in Kitakyushu-city.

 

Firefly Museum was established as a facility that supports activities related to preservation

of the natural environment, learning and research on fireflies and other waterside

creatures and their habitats.

Refined waste papers is recycled into toilet papers.
Sludge generated during the toilet paper production process is used to produce a

foaming inhibitor used by steel works.

 

Product : Household toilet paper

Raw material : 100 % of waste paper come from offices and household is used
