Kumamoto travel guide

 

Kumamoto-city, situated roughly in the center of Kumamoto-prefecture, is the

government and economic center of the prefecture.

From the early 17th century to the end of the 19th century, Kumamoto was prosperous

as a castle town. The Shira-kawa River and its branches run through the downtown area

around Kumamoto Castle.

Therefore, the city is called “City of Forest and Fresh Water.”

Mount Sarakura

The hight of the mountain is 622 meters from sea level.

In 10 minutes, you can reach the summit from the Cable Car Station using the Cable Car 

and the Slope Car.  At the top you are presented with a magnificent and spectacular view

Moji-ko Port flourished following its 889 designation as a Special National Port for exporting

Only the place in the world !   You can cross the strait on foot.  The Kanmon Strait, separating Honshu

and Kyushu, is a very beautiful and busy waterway with as many as 700 small and  large ships a

day passing through it. the Kanmon Pedestrian Tunnel, which enables people to cross on foot, the

“ferries”, and the like.​

 

 

 

Kanmon Bridge

It is s a suspended bridge crossing the  Kanmon Strait, a stretch of water separating two of

Japan’s four main islands.  It is the 34th largest suspension bridge in the world with a central

Hiraodai Karst Plateau & Caves

 

One of the three largest karst plateau in Japan 

along with the Akiyoshi-dai Plateau and the Shikoku Karst. 

 

It is located in southeastern part of Kitakyushu-city. 

At altitudes between 400 and 600 meters above sea level and stretching 6 km from north to south

and 2 km from east to west.  

     

 

Yougunbaru, which was so names because of the limestone which stands in row like a flock of sheep

in a vast meadow, dolines (conical hollows) and limestone caves create distinctive scenery.

The Plateau offers a different views in each of the four seasons, resembling a burnt field in the spring, 
appearing fresh and green in the early summer, and similar to a dry plain in the fall. 

 

Hiraodai Countryside Park

The most distinguished Japanese Karstic Hiraodai Park.  There is 22ha of lawn square with

observation platform, and a wild grass garden. There is also a plateau fruit tree garden. 

Moreover, the visitor can enjoy the experience of doing activities such as making buckwheat

noodle (soba), ceramics, art flower, and woodwork.​

 

 


 

 Limestone Caves  

 

There are three limestone Caves in Hiraodai Karst and each cave has different unique features. 

 

Senbutsu limestone cave

the largest limestone caves in Hiraodai Karst Plateau

extending about 900 m while meandering toward the northeast. The shape of the cave is narrow,

narrow ceiling ravine with a maximum width of 10 m and a maximum ceiling height of 15 m.

 

 

Mejiro limestone Cave

It is the longest cave in Hiraodai Karst, over 2 km in length.

The highlight of this cave is the monolithic ceiling which is a very unique structure as a limestone caves.

     

 

Ojika Limestone Cave

The cave is called footfall of dinosaurs.  It is the very rare cave in Japan; the entrance is vertical

pit with 25 meter, when getting down to the bottom, you follow the underground horizontal cave

and you can see the hidden aspects of Hiraodai Karst.


 

Hirotani Wetland

It is the only wetland in Fukuoka Prefecture, located 600 meters west from Seiryu Cave and

2,500 m east from Hiraodai Nature Observation Center. The wetland is an important part of 

Hiraodai Karst landform, offering a variety of wetland plant life such as the Sagiso (rein orchis),

Tokiso (pogonia), and Nohanasyobu (iris).

Mojiko Retro

 

The exotic district of Mojiko-Retro

 

Moji-ko Port flourished following its 1889 designation as a Special National Port for 
exporting coal and other products. Close to China, it served as a trading port making an
important contribution to modernization of Japan.
 
Time have changed but architectural remainder like the former Moji Customs

Building from 1912, the wooden Mojiko Station Building from 1914, and the former Osaka Mitshi

O.S.L Line building from 1917 in Moji-ko Port Retro area remain as symbols and attractions.

Mitsui Club

It was built by the Mitsui Co., Ltd in 1921 as a reception centre and to provide accommodation

for VIP’s.   Albert Einstein (1879-1955), one of the world’s most famous theoretical physicists,

stayed here during his visit to Japan with his wife in 1922.


 

Blue Wing Moji

This bridge, made in 2003, is the only pedestrian draw bridge in Japan, and is one the

most popular photo spot in Mojiko Retro. The length of the bridge is 108 meters and 

it is opened 6 times a day at 10h, 11h, 13h, 14h, 15h and 16h.​


 

Kyushu Railway Museum

It is a railway theme park organized by JR Kyushu, showing the history of Kyushu Railways.

The display of steam locomotives and old trains used by Kyushu Railway is fascinating and 

always evokes feelings of nostalgia among visitors.


 

Kaikyo Plaza

The shopping area in the Mojiko Retro district located by the sea. “Full of a romance market

which stir up forgetting contentment” is the direct translation of the concept Kaikyo Plaza is

based on. The area has a very romantic ambience and evokes feeling of nostalgia and

World Heritage in Kitakyushu

 

World Heritage, Site of Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution

 

The four sites of Yawata Steel Works in Kitakyushu area have been inscribed 

as Iron and Steel Industry.

Iron and Steel, Shipbuilding, and Coal Mining, are a grouping of historic sites that played

an important part in the industrialization of Japan in the Bakumatsu and Meiji periods.


 History of Industrial Revolution  

 

The buildings of the Imperial Steel Works, Japan at Yawata Works are the surviving

components of Asia’s first successful integrated iron and steel works: the State-run

Imperial Steel Works opened in 1901. 

It is located in the northernmost part of Fukuoka Prefecture, the north end of Kyushu, 8 km

south of Hibiki-Nada Seashore close to the continent of China

Onga River Pump Station

Built in 1910 on the east bank of the Onga River.
It served, and still serves, to deliver industrial water to Yawata via an 11.4 km pipeline.

This supply is integral to the steel production process and was necessary to cope with the 

1st phase expansion of the Imperial Steel Works.

Steel-framed repair workshops

Built in 1900. It was used for the fabrication and assembly of a parts and the repair of machinery used at the Steel Works. 
It is the oldest existing steel-structured building in Japan and, more than 100 years later, is still a repair shop. The facility houses its original travelling crane and it is still in use for maintenance work.

 

Former Forge Shop

Built in 1900 using designs and steel products from the German steel manufacturer, the purpose of manufacturing forgings such as large scaled spanners, chisels, hammers and stands for machine mounting needed for the construction of the steelworks.

Japan’s Modern Steel Works history started here

Yawata was a rural village with a small population of agriculture and fishing industry.

And this place was decided in Parliament as the Japan’s Modern Steel Works

construction site in 1897.


 

In April 2007, based on this theme of “innovation,” the Kitakyushu Innovation Gallery & Studio (KIGS)

opened in Yahata, Higashida, the first site of steel manufacturing in Japan’s modern age.

The birth place where Japan’s steel industry began in 1901
It contributed greatly to the development of the Japanese steel industry and was used until 1972,
and has been preserved just as it was. 

 
Built in 1899, ahead of production facilities. It is an architectural fusion
of Japanese and European design, a two story red brick building with
bilateral symmetry and a central dome set in a Japanese tile roof. 

This office is a Witness who has been watching the history of industrial

modernization in Japan while also experiencing war.

The western-style building of Art Deco style architecture which was completed in 1927,
and opened as an employee club of the then-owned Yawata Steel Works. The Hall building 
received the Kitakyushu City Architectural Culture Award in 1989. 
 

 
The first-class civil construction heritage that triggered the registration of World Cultural Heritage of
Meiji Japan’s Industrial Revolution. The Kawachi Reservoir was constructed for the industrial water
supply to Yawata Steel Works. 

 

Connected between Yawata and Tobata. Construction work took three years, and completed in 1930. 

The most difficult and hard work was making Miyatayama tunnel with a total length of 1180 m due to

suffering from floods.

The gates of the Miyatayama tunnel are decorated with stately designs.

Kokura Castle

 

Kitakyushu’s landmark Kokura Castle

 

Located within a walking distance of JR Kokura Stations.

 

Hosokawa Tadaoki commenced the construction of Kokura Castle in 1602 and spent 7 years to
completed it. The castle had a fivefold and six layered donjon and it was built in the architectural 
style called “Kara-zukuri”.
Then, it served as a residence of the Ogasawara clan. 
In 1866, it was burnt down by the Choshu
War, and the existing castle was reconstructed in 1959.

Kora Taisha Shrine  

The largest Shrine in Kyushu and the shrine is specified as Ichino-miya or the representative

Shrine in Chikugo region. Located in Kurume-city, stand at the middle of Kora Mountain.

From the Shrine compound, breath taking magnificent view of Chikugo plain can be seen.

The city of Japanese Tea and Traditional Crafts

Located in the southern part of Fukuoka-prefecture, Yame grew in size after the merger

with Kurogi town,Tachibana town,Yabe village,Hoshino village in 2010.

The Museum was built in 1986 with the purpose of gathering traditional craft items together

and transferring traditional techniques and development of local industry.

Yame Fukushima

The Fukushima area is designated as an important traditional buildings preservation

area by the Japanese government. Since the Edo Era (1603 – 1868), the area has flourished as

an economical and political base, and many merchant houses which retain the atmosphere of that

time remain even today, mainly in the towns of Miyano, Kyo, and Furumatsu.


 

Sake Brewery Kiyaya

Kitaya is renowned Saka brewer in Yame,was founded some 190 years ago during the Edo Era.

The Sake is produced using high-grade rice if brewing quality rice of brewing

cultivated in Fukuoka-prefecture. The Brewery can be visited and enjoy sampling Sake.


 

Featured Japanese restaurant Ginnoka

The restaurant Ginnoka uses Japanese old style house built 100 years ago,

and located next to the Sake brewery Kitaya.

The restaurant opened in 2014 and serving Japanese cuisines which is compatible

with Sake using local abundant ingredients such as vegetables, fruits and fresh river and sea fishes.

 


 

Hoshino village

The most beautiful village in Japan

Located in the southeastern part of Fukuoka Prefecture, and east side of Yame-city,

at altitudes between 200 and 1,000 metres above sea level.

As 84 percent of the village is covered with mountain forests, agriculture and forestry

are the two main industries.

Kurogi large Wisteria tree

The Wisteria Festival takes place between mid-April and early May. 

The tree is more than 600 years old

The total area of its scaffolding structure at 3,000 square meters and its longest flower

clusters measuring in at 150 centimeters, the tree looks truly spectacular when it blooms.
