Ground Zero

Disastrous War must not be repeated. The plutonium atomic bomb exploded about 500m over the

central monument at 11:02 a.m. on August 9, 1945. 
The most part of Nagasaki was destroyed, and a tremendous number of lives were lost.  

Pope Francis visited Nagasaki on November 24, 2019, and calls for a ‘world without nuclear

weapons’ at the Ground Zero.

Martyrdom of the 26 Saints of Japan     

Nishizaka hill is the most significant Christian Pilgrimage site in Japan.

The Twenty-Six Martyrs of Japan were a group of Catholics who were executed by
crucifixion on February 5, 1597.Their martyrdom is especially significant in the history
of the Catholic Church in Japan.
In 1637, Lorenzo Luiz from Philippines martyred here at Nishizaka hill.
In 1950, Pope Pius XII designated this place as an official pilgrimage site for Catholics.
And Saint Teresa of Calcutta commonly known as Mother Teresa visited in 1982
and Pope Francis visited here in 2019.

The 26 Japanese martyrs have 

been canonized in 1862

The museum behind the Monument is devoted to the memory of the martyrs and to Christianity in

Japan in general. Its interior is reminiscent of a church with stained-glass windows, making for

atmospheric viewing of the exhibits. On display are artifacts related to Christianity in Japan,

including old documents, statues and jewelry.

Basilica of Martyrdom of the 26 Saints of Japan. Built in 1865 under the supervision of the French

priest Bernard Petitjean.  It was designated as a National Treasure in 1933 for its value as Japan’s 

oldest Gothic-style Cathedral.

It is a local cuisine in Obama Onsen resort, made of noodles, seafood, and vegetables.

The feature of the restaurant in Obama Onsen serving everything from any Japanese style including

Susi and Chanpon. Shrimp are found in abundance along the beaches near the Onsen, and a special

soup is made from them.

 

 

Unzen, Nita Pass

Unzen is a beautiful mountain and Onsen resort, and was the first area to be designated as   

a National Park in Japan. At any time of the year the natural scenery of Nita-toge Pass in Unzen

is magnificent. Azaleas, green leaves, brilliant autumnal tints of maples and silver frost

represent each season of the year.

Means Hell, is the number one attraction of Unzen with a peculiar smell of sulfur emitted

from the springs, and with white smoke rising from the ground over a wide area.

Unfortunately, this was once put into reality nearly 350 years ago during the time of 

religious persecution in Japan.  30 Japanese Christians, failing to renounce their faith

met their death here in the scalding spring of Jigoku.

Harajo Castle ruins

The Battle field of Shimabara Rebellion which was a peasant uprising agaist bakufu’s

persecution of Christians under the leadership of Amakusa Shiro in 1637.  Christian farmers

rose in a riot due to their grievance about the oppression by Matsukura Shigemasa. The

Shogunate regarded this riot as Christian rebellion and sent its punitive force, therefore locked

themselves in the castle and with their leader Amakusa Shiro Tokisada fought against the

Shogunate. On February 27, 1638, he died in battle.

The following day, the castle fell. 37,000 Christians including women and children died a

violent death.

The castle was built in 1625 by the feudal load Matsukura Shigemasawho was regarded as

a master of Castle building. The castle, which took 7 years to complete, is also known as 

“Moritake Castle”.  It was an almost rectangular flatland castle built in the Renkaku-style.

Samurai was a term for the military nobility in pre-industrial Japan.

The Samurai houses in Shimabara along the old Samurai street nearby Shimabara Castle

were built in 18th century.

Guzoni are said to date back to the Shimabara Rebellion of 1637 when the leader of the

uprising, Amakusa Shiro Tokisada, held a siege in Hara Castle with about 37,000 followers.
He made the local farmers provide the rebels with rice cake. The rebels gathered other

ingredients from the ocean and the mountains to put in the soup they cooked the rice cake

in, and thus were able to fight for three months sustained by nutritious food.

Hinoe Castle Ruins         

During the period of the Southern and Northern Courts (1337-92), the Arima family ruling the

Shimabara Peninsula constructed a castle named Hinoe-jo.

The 14th lord, Harunobu (1567-1612) was a Christian daimyo and refurbished his castle into

a large scale which had gardens, a tea arbor and many rooms.

Takachiho shrine   

Located just west of the town center, is nestled in a grove of tall cedars. During the day the

shrine’s nondescript, unpainted buildings blend in naturally with the surrounding trees. In the

evening, you can enjoy the Yokagura Dance.

Somen is a kind of noodle which is made by wheat and is usually eaten by dipping style.
Somen nagashi is the way of eating Somen with waterslide traditionally made by bamboo

like as video below. Nagashi means flowing.

 

 

 

Takachiho Gorge 

A narrow chasm cut through the rock by the Gokase River.  The nearly sheer cliffs lining

the gorge are made of slow forming volcanic basalt columns which resemble the scales of

a dragon where the stone twisted and flowed as it formed.

The most recommended activity at Takachiho Gorge is riding the river that flows down the

base of the gorge on a rental boat.The spot you can see waterfalls and the columnar shaped

Amano Iwato shrine  

Japanese indigenouse religion, Shinto born here.

There is a story of Shinto origin in the Cave behind of Amano Iwato Shrine, and Amano

Yasugawara. About ten kilometers outside of central TakachihoAmano Iwato Shrine

Sakurai Futamigaura

A beautiful sunset scenic spot at Genkai Sea, the place is selected as Japan’s 100 scenic 

beauty sunset beach.  Located in Genkai Quasi-National Park. The married rock is connected

by the large Shimenawa with 30 metre length and 1 ton weight. Male rock is 11.8 metre high

The most largest basalt cave in Japan consist of octagon and hexagon columnar joints.

The entrance of the cave is 64 metre high and 10 metre width and the depth is 90 metre.

Anego-hama beach

One of the most beautiful beach in Itoshima. Anego no Hama Beach is a beach of “singing”

sand that makes a squeaking sound when people walk on it. It is said that singing sand exists

only on clean beaches, and that 90 such beaches used to exist in Japan.  Today, however,

just 20 singing sand beaches remain due to environmental changes, making beaches like

Anego-hama a rarity.

Raizan Sennyo-ji temple

One of the most famous temple in Fukuoka-prefecture known for being a great place for cherry

blossom viewing in the spring, and many people visit in the autumn to see the fall foliage.

The temple was founded in 725, Nara period by Seiga, who come from India as a priest

during the period. There is an Important Cultural Property which is the 4.8 meter wooden 

Avalokitesvara statue in the main hall.

Shiraito Waterfall

The waterfall is located near the source of Katsuki River. It’s 30 meters high. It is known for

clear water, and said to live Sansyouo. In front of the fall, a Banryu maple tree grows naturally

that lives more than 300 years. In autumn, lots of visitors come to see autumn leaves at the

pedestrian and the maple tree leaves.

Itoshima oyster growing up in the rich nature of mountain and sea. There are many Oyster

Barbecue Huts at five fishing harbours. The huts only open during the season, from end of

Peace Park

Established in 1955 near the Ground Zero where the Atomic Bomb was dropped at 11:02 am

on Aug. 09, 1945. Peace Memorial Ceremony is held in front of the statue on August 9 every

year and the Mayor of Nagasaki makes the “Nagasaki peace declaration” for the whole world.

Glover Garden  / UNESCO World Heritage Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution

The garden takes its name from Thomas Glover, his arms-importing operations played 
an important part in the Meiji Restoration, he built the first train line in Japan and he even

Oura Cathedral / UNESCO World Heritage Hidden Christian sites

Basilica of Martyrdom of the 26 Saints of Japan. Built in 1865 under the supervision of the

French priest Bernard Petitjean. It was designated as a National Treasure in 1933 for its

value as Japan’s oldest Gothic-style Cathedral.

Dejima 

Only the trading port in Japan during Natinal isolation. The fan-shaped artificial island in the

bay of Nagasaki that was a Dutch trading port as Japan’s only open gateway to Europe during

Japan’s self-imposed isolation of Edo period from 1641 until 1853.  The Dutch East India

Company’s trading post at Dejima was closed in 1857. Since then, the island has been 

surrounded by reclaimed land and merged into Nagasaki: its original location is marked by rivets.

Mount Inasa

It is a 333 meter high mountain in close distance to JR Nagasaki Station. The summit can be

reached by ropeway or car and offers great views over the city. And also, the magnificent night

Martyrdom of the 26 Saints of Japan     

Nishizaka Hill in Nagasaki is the place of Martyrdom of 26 Japanese Saints.

The Twenty-Six Martyrs of Japan were a group of Catholics who were executed by
crucifixion on February 5, 1597.Their martyrdom is especially significant in the history
of the Catholic Church in Japan.
In 1950, Pope Pius XII designated this place as an official pilgrimage site for Catholics.
And Saint Teresa of Calcutta commonly known as Mother Teresa visited here in 1982.

Confucius Shrine

The world’s only Confucian shrine built outside China by Chinese hands.

First built in 1893 by Chinese residents of Nagasaki with the support of the Ch’ing Dynasty

government, the shrine was designed to serve as a place of worship and learning for the 

Chinese community, and housed a Confucian sanctuary and primary school.

Megane-bashi bridge

The oldest stone arch bridge in Japan, Meganebashi or Spectacles Bridge, over the

Nakashima River was built in Nagasaki in 1634 by the Chinese monk Mokusunyoujo

who is a second generation of Chinese monks living at Kofukuji Temple.

Hashima Coal Mine  /  Gunkan-jima island cruise

Hashima coal mining island is an artificial reclaimed island and the site of Japan’s first major

undersea coal exploitation (1890) pioneered by Mitsubishi – and host to one of the world’s

most extraordinary former mining communities. Hashima Island is located 3 km southwest of

Takashima, and it was the success of Takashima that led Mitsubishi to purchase this island,

both islands giving access to the same undersea coal deposit. Now Hashima is a ruin called

“Gunkanjima”, so called after its resemblance to the silhouette of a battleship.

Yanagawa

The Beautiful Canal town Yanagawa located about 60km south of Fukuoka-city and is

a former Castle town facing the Ariake Bay and spreading in the Chikugo plain.

Dazaifu  

Dazaifu is a historical place, about 1300 years ago, in Dazaifu, there was a government

office to manage the entire Kyushu  for a long period of 500 years at the present Dazaifu.

The Shrine dedicated to the deity of learning. Many Japanese visit the Shrine to pass the

examination successfuly. Built on the site of grave of Sugawara Michizane, who is deified

as the Deity of scholarship. The shrine is the headquarter shrine of 12,000 Tenmangu

Kyushu National Museum

Kyushu National Museum was opened in 2005 in Dazaifu-city next to Dazaifu Tenmangu

Shrine, as Japan’s fourth national museum after Tokyo, Kyoto and Nara.

Nara (710 to 794 AD) and Heian (794 to 1185 AD) period. The Dazaifu was responsible

Aso & Takachiho 2 days tour

 

The dynamic nature of Aso and Takachiho where is spreading around Mt. Aso.

 

Mt. Aso is the largest active volcano in Japan, and is among the largest in the world.

Mount Aso has a fairly large caldera which is one of the largest caldera in the world, 25 km

north-south and 18 km east-west with a circumference of around 120 km, although sources

vary on the exact distance.

The present Aso caldera formed as a result of four huge caldera eruptions occurring over

a range of 90,000 to 300,000 years ago.

 

The tour introduces the large scale of the Dynamic Nature which cannot be seen in no

The largest active volcano in Japan

Its peak is 1592 m above sea level. Its caldera is 25 km across north to south and 18 km 

across east to west. The caldera has a circumference of around 120 km, although sources

The hidden tourist spot in Kumamoto prefecture, located just outside Oguni town in Aso region.

One of the area’s more well-known waterfalls. Looking like a mini-Niagara. It is very unique

waterfalls, you can actually climb behind the falls to see how the water has carved out the rock

Kurokawa Onsen

Located on the northern side of  Mount Aso.   Widely known for its open-air baths, it is

one of the best places to enjoy the atmosphere of old town in Japan, where more than 

20 Inns (Ryokan)and gift shops standing in a row along the Tanoharu River, a

Daikanbo

The perfect spot view the five peak of Mount Aso 

Daikanbo literally means a big observatory peak.

The circumference of the Aso caldera is about 130 kilometers. From the observation site,

you can clearly see its conical shape.

Takachiho Gorge

A narrow chasm cut through the rock by the Gokase River.  The nearly sheer cliffs lining the

gorge are made of slow forming volcanic basalt columns which resemble the scales of a dragon

where the stone twisted and flowed as it formed.

Somen is a kind of noodle which is made by wheat and is usually eaten by dipping style.
Somen nagashi is the way of eating Somen with waterslide traditionally made by bamboo

like as video below. Nagashi means flowing.

The most recommended activity at Takachiho Gorge is riding the river that flows down the

base of the gorge on a rental boat.The spot you can see waterfalls and the columnar shaped

Located just west of the town center, is nestled in a grove of tall cedars. During the day the shrine’s

nondescript, unpainted buildings blend in naturally with the surrounding trees. In the evening,

About ten kilometers outside of central Takachiho the Shrine was built near the cave where

Amaterasu is said to have hid herself away.  The cave cannot be approached, however,

Two Onsen Resorts are located in Oita-prefecture, and have different fascinating

features.

Oita-prefecture is on the north-eastern area of Kyushu and a representative

Onsen Resort area in Japan, total boasting hot spring sources and hot spring flowing

Yufuin

A beautiful and tranquil Onsen Resort, Yufuin is located about 15 km west of Beppu and is spreading

in the Yufu basin at the mountain foot of Yufu. 

 

Yunotsubo Avenue

Main street in Yufuin located at the foot of mount Yufu. The avenue is started near JR Yufuin

Station and connected to Kinrinko lake. Through Yunotsubo Avenue, it takes about 30 minutes

on foot from JR Yufuin Station to Kinrinko lake. There are 70 shops, gift shop, galleries, curiosity

Kinrinko lake

One of landmark in Yufuin. Hot water gushes from the bottom of the lake, and hot

steam rises from its surface on a cold day.  The lake is located at the end of the

town’s main walking route, about a kilometer and a half from the Yufuin station.

Yufumabushi is a local cuisine which serves really nice BUNGO Beef.

But surprisingly, the way they serve beef is not BBQ or SUKIYAKI style that are seen in

most cases, but “Yufumabushi ” style which we rarely see for beef dish.

Beppu Hell tour 

Hell (Jigoku Meguri ) tour that is a collection of hot spring where the water bubbles forth from 
underground, often with unusual result.  Seven of the hells are located in the Kannawa district
where over 4 km northwest of Beppu station, and two in the more remote Shibaseki district.

Jigoku Mushi kobo

Jigoku Mushi,  literally “hell-steaming” is an unusual cooking method found in Beppu.

It’s a simple but impactful method that dates back to the Edo Period. Jigoku Mushi Kobo

features an interesting hands-on workshop where you can cook food yourself in the

searing onsen steam.

Mount Tsurumi

Soaring 1375 metres into the sky, Mount Tsurumi is a breathtaking mountain overlooking

Beppu that offers some decent hiking, rare flora and outstanding vistas. Visitors can take

a ropeway 800 metres up and revel in being surrounded by acres of rolling greenery.

On clear days, you can see as far as the Kuju Mountains, a famous mountain range

that runs between Oita and Kumamoto-prefectures.

About 1700 wild Japanese monkey are living in the park. The monkeys are fed regularly

by park wardens in order to keep them on the mountain and prevent conflicts with farmers

and residents in the neighborhood.

Onsen Hoyo land

The Onsen is a public bath located in Myoban Onsen Resort.

This place is known by its mud looks like a cream, and is rarely found in Japan.

The mud has an excellent skin beautifying effect. The outdoor mud is a mixed-gender bath.

 


 

Myoban Onsen

Onsen Resort where Alum is being collected. The Onsen Resort town where the Yunohana or Alum

have been collected since more than 200 years ago.  Myoban means Alum in Japanese.

Myoban is a geothermal area located at an altitude of 400 metre at the middle Garan mountain

and a little away from the centre of Beppu-city.

Where to explore

 

Toho Village

Hoshuyama district, a mountain area blessed with nature and Koisiwara district, pottery industry

representative of Kyushu. Koishiwara-yaki is a type of Japanese traditional pottery in Koishiwara.

The history dates back to the 17th century, when the third Lord Kuroda Mitsuyuki (1628–1707)

invited potters from Imari, Saga-prefecture to Fukuoka.

Ukiha Inari Shrine

Breath taking beautiful scenery in harmony with the Shrine. Located at foot of Mino mountain

range, 130 m height from sea level. The 90 vermilion coloured Torii Gates stand on the 300

steps stairs is introduced you from bottom area to the Shrine main building.

Asakura Triple Water Wheel

Asakura is the only area in Japan to use water wheels for irrigation. The irrigation system

used the Triple Water Wheel was completed in 1760. The water is supplied from Yamada

Weir in Chikugo through the canal to the Triple Water Wheel. And then the water distributed

to each rice field by Triple Water Wheel.

Fujii Apiary

The apiary collecting honey while traveling with bees from Kagoshima to Hokkaido.

The Apiary was established in Asakura in 1909 and offers delicious Japanese milkvetch

honey and acacia honey, both of which have a deep and sophisticated taste.

Shirakabe-dori Avenue

Time-honored scenery, back to 100 years ago. Located in Yoshii-machi, Shirakabe, literary

meaning is white wall. The avenue of houses with white wall were constructed about 100

years ago.  About 250 houses in the area has been designated as National important raditional

buildings preservation district.

The chef who makes that cuisines also has experienced the imperial family’s cook.

The building is designated by Government as Traditional building at the Conservation district

in Ukiha-city. Japanese cuisines using best local ingredients that vary by season can be

Chilugo region is one of the famous place for Eel cuisines along with Yanagawa.

Shogetu is the renown Eel restutant located in Asakura along the Chikugo river side and

Let’s sample Chochu at Beniotome Shuzo. Shochu is a Japanese distilled beverage less

than 45% alcohol by volume. The shochu of Beniotome Shuzo is distilled from Sesame.

Akizuki is a former Castle town located in northern part of Asakura. You can enjoy the

harmony of countryside landscape and former castle town scenery that makes the

atmosphere like a time of 400 years ago.

Yamada Weir

Only here in Japan,  the stone-covered Weir constructed. Yamada weir is a construction

for the irrigation system that water is supplied from Yamada weir in Chikugo through the

canal to the Triple Water Wheel to rice field. The large and small stones are stacked against

water flow, and leads water to the irrigation canal while suppressing the momentum of the

Chikugo River.

Tachiarai Peace Memorial Museum   

The main exhibit room displays a few letters and other items of kamikaze pilots who died

in battle. One case has photos of about 50 kamikaze pilots from Tachiarai Air Base and

includes the following information on each pilot: name, unit, plane used, date of death,

and air base of final sortie.

Kora Taisha Shrine  

The largest Shrine in Kyushu and the shrine is specified as Ichino-miya or the representative

Shrine in Chikugo region. Located in Kurume-city, stand at the middle of Kora Mountain.

From the Shrine compound, breath taking magnificent view of Chikugo plain can be seen.
