Nagasaki Pilgrimage one-day tour

Where to visit : Pilgrimage sites in Sotome and Nagasaki-city

Christian history in Japan was started when St. Francis Xavier came to Japan as a first Christian

missionary in 1549. Then Christianity was spread in Nagasaki region. However, unparalleled

hidden Cristian history was started from when Toyotomi Hideyoshi Shogunate proclaimed Christian

ban in 1587. During ban on Christianity, people secretly continued to faith while surviving in the

midst of the conventional society and Japanese religions.

Since ban on the Christianity was lifted in 1873, new Christian history in Japan has begun.

Sotome is a rural, coastal area on the peninsula north of central Nagasaki. During the ban

on Christianity, Sotome was home to communities of “Hidden Christians”, many of whom

emigrated there from other parts of Nagasaki as the remote region allowed them to practice

their religion in secret. 

 

Shitsu Church

On an elevation commanding a view over the Sea of Goto, Father Marc Marie de Rotz

established a church at his own expense 1882. The building was extended and renovated

again and again. A statue of Mary that he ordered from France is standing in the bell tower.

Endo Shusaku Literary Museum         

The setting of Endo Shusaku’s novel Silence. Sotome is blessed with a unique history and

culture of Christianity. In particular, the area in which the Endo Shusaku Literary Museum

stands is known as the site of a Christian village, one of Endo’s most notable work, Silence.

 

 

Ground Zero

Disastrous War must not be repeated. The plutonium atomic bomb exploded about 500m over the

central monument at 11:02 a.m. on August 9, 1945.  The most part of Nagasaki was destroyed, and

a tremendous number of lives were lost.  Pope Francis visited Nagasaki on November 24, 2019, and

calls for a ‘world without nuclear weapons’ at the Ground Zero.

Nagasaki China town at shinchi is one of the big three china town in Japan. There are about

Martyrdom of the 26 Saints of Japan     

Nishizaka hill is the most significant Christian Pilgrimage site in Japan. The 26 Martyrs of Japan

were a group of Catholics who were executed by rucifixion on February 5, 1597.Their martyrdom

is especially significant in the history of the Catholic Church in Japan. In 1637, St. Lorenzo Luiz

from Philippines martyred here at Nishizaka hill.


 

The museum behind the Monument is devoted to the memory of the martyrs and to Christianity in

Japan in general. Its interior is reminiscent of a church with stained-glass windows, making for

atmospheric viewing of the exhibits. On display are artifacts related to Christianity in Japan,

including old documents, statues and jewelry.


 

Oura Cathedral  / UNESCO World Heritage

The Cathedral is one of the significant Christian Pilgrimage site in Japan. Established 1865, this

church is officially known as “Oura Cathedral, the Church of 26 Martyrs.” It was built by the French

priest Bernard Petitjean of Fier who had been dispatched by the Foreign Missionary Church of

Paris to dedicate prayers to the 26 saints martyred on Nishizaka hill.

Christian history in Japan was started when St. Francis Xavier came to Japan as a first Christian

Glover Garden   / UNESCO World Heritage

The garden takes its name from Thomas Glover, his arms-importing operations played an important

part in the Meiji Restoration, he built the first train line in Japan and he even helped establish the

first modern Mitsubishi ship yard.


 

Mount Inasa

It is a 333 meter high mountain in close distance to JR Nagasaki Station. The summit can

be reached by ropeway or car and offers great views over the city. And also, the magnificent

night views from Mount Inasa are ranked among Japan’s three best night views.

Where to visit  
 

Established in 1955 near the Ground Zero where the Atomic Bomb was droppedat 11:02 am

on Aug. 09, 1945. Peace Memorial Ceremony is held in front of the statue on August 9 every

yearand the Mayor of Nagasaki makes the “Nagasaki peace declaration” for the whole world.

 

Atomic Bomb Museum

The museum exhibits a number of photograph that depict the devastation caused by atomic

bomb showing the lead-up to this tragic day, the history of the development of nuclear arms

and our desire for peace.


 

Ground Zero

The plutonium atomic bomb exploded about 500m over the central monument at 11:02 a.m.on

August 9, 1945.   The most part of Nagasaki was destroyed, and a tremendous number of lives

were lost. And about 70,000 of Nagasaki’s 240,000 residents died instantly, and up to 60,000

were injured. 


 

Peace Statue

Completed in 1955, ten years after the atomic bombing. The 9.7 meter high statue sitting on

a 4 meter tall pedestal, made by renown sculptor Kitamura Seibo. The raised arm points to the

threat of nuclear weapons and the out-stretched arm symbolizes peace.

Obama Chanpon 

It is a local cuisine in Obama Onsen resort, made of noodles, seafood, and vegetables. The feature

of the restaurant in Obama Onsen serving everything from any Japanese style including Susi and

Chanpon. Shrimp are found in abundance along the beaches near the Onsen, and a special soup

is made from them.

 

 

Unzen, Nita Pass

Unzen is a beautiful mountain and Onsen resort, and was the first area to be designated as   

a National Park in Japan. At any time of the year the natural scenery of Nita-toge Pass in Unzen

is magnificent. Azaleas, green leaves, brilliant autumnal tints of maples and silver frost

represent each season of the year.


 

Means Hell, is the number one attraction of Unzen with a peculiar smell of sulfur emitted from

the springs, and with white smoke rising from the ground over a wide area. Unfortunately, this

was once put into reality nearly 350 years ago during the time of religious persecution in Japan. 

 30 Japanese Christians, failing to renounce their faith met their death here in the scalding spring

of Jigoku.

Shimabara Castle

The castle was built in 1625 by the feudal load Matsukura Shigemasawho was regarded as

a master of Castle building. The castle, which took 7 years to complete, is also known as 

“Moritake Castle”.  It was an almost rectangular flatland castle built in the Renkaku-style.


 

Samurai Houses & Samurai street

Samurai was a term for the military nobility in pre-industrial Japan. The Samurai houses in

Shimabara along the old Samurai street nearby Shimabara Castle were built in 18th century.

Guzoni is said to created during the Shimabara Rebellion of 1637.  When Cristians were fought

under the leader ship of Amakusa Shiro, they brought various ingredients such as rice cake, fishes

and vegetables, and made a stew.   This is the origin of Guzoni.

Hinoe Castle Ruins         

During the period of the Southern and Northern Courts (1337-92), the Arima family ruling the

Shimabara Peninsula constructed a castle named Hinoe-jo. The 14th lord, Harunobu (1567-1612)

was a Christian daimyo and refurbished his castle into a large scale which had gardens, a tea

arbor and many rooms.

Where to explore 

 

Mount Sarakura

The hight of the mountain is 622 meters from sea level. At the top you are presented with a

magnificent and spectacular view of Kitakyushu. ​In 10 minutes, you can reach the summit 

from the Cable Car Station using the Cable car and the Slope car. 


 

Higashida

Japan’s modern steel industry was started as Yawata steel Works at Higashida district in 1901.

Since then, the Works greatly contributed to Japan’s industrial modernization. The three sites in

Higashida have been registered on UNESCO World Heritage  as Sites of Japan’s Meiji Industrial

Revolution.

 

Higashida No.1 Blast Furnace

Only the Blast  Furnace in the world which preserved as it was. The birth place where 

Japan’s steel industry began in 1901. It contributed greatly to the development of the

Japanese steel industry and was used until 1972, and has been preserved just as it was.


 

First Head Office of the Steel Works  / UNESCO World Heritage  

Built in 1899, ahead of production facilities. It is an architectural fusion of Japanese and European

design, a two story red brick building with bilateral symmetry and a central dome set in a Japanese

 tile roof.


 

Museum of Industrial Technology. In April 2007, based on this theme of “innovation, ” the Kitakyushu

Innovation Gallery & Studio (KIGS) opened in Yahata, Higashida, the first site of steel manufacturing

in Japan’s modern age. Various things related Industry technologies are exhibited.


 

Kokura Caltle

Fukuoka–prefecture only in Japan is selected by CNN Travel as one of the top 19 places

to visit in 2019And the Photo of Kokura Castle is used for introducing Fukuoka-prefecture

Kokura Castle is one of the most famous land marks in Kitakyushu. The construction was

commenced in 1602 and spent 7 years to completed it.  

 


 

Dr. Albert Einstein awarded Nobel Prize in Physic visited Moji in 1922, and he acclaimed

that everything could see were Arts. The exotic district of Mojiko Retro is visited by more 

than 2 million tourists a year. Moji-ko Port flourished following its 889 designation as a

Special National Port for exporting coal and other products. 

 

 

 


 

Konamon Pedstrian tunnel

Only the place in the world !   You can cross the strait on foot.  The Kanmon Strait, separating

Honshu and Kyushu, is a very beautiful and busy waterway with as many as 700 small and 

large ships a day passing through it. The Kanmon Pedestrian Tunnel, which enables people to 

cross on foot.​

Kawara soba is a local cuisine which Soba noodles and meat are cooked together on a Kawara

(stone roof tile) and dipped into a special sauce when eating it.

Yaki curry latterly means baked curry and is local cuisine in Moji which is curry with rice topped

with cheese and/or egg heated in oven. The melted cheese and soft-boiled egg combine with the

spicy curry to enhance its flavor even more.

Manga Museum and Aru Aru City 

Manga Museum is located next to JR Kokura station. The museum is located on the 6th floor

of Aru Aru City, a multi-floored shopping mall devoted to products and services for anime, manga,

idol culture, and cosplay fans, a kind of Harajuku in miniature.

 


 

Kitakyushu is the dynamic city where one million people are living and working, is creating

the beautiful Night view which you have never seen before. The night view from the mount

Sarakura is chosen the three major Night View in Japan. The area of Night view is the largest

in the World ; about 40km east to west and 10km south to north and also the number of

lighting to create the night view is the largest in the World. 


 

Hiraodai Karst Plateau & Caves 

One of the three largest Karst Plateau in Japan along with the Akiyoshi-dai Plateau and the 

Shikoku Karst. It is located in southeastern part of Kitakyushu-city. At altitudes between 

400 and 600 meters above sea level and stretching 6 km from north to south and 2 km from

east to west.  


 

TOYOTA Motor Kyushu

Established in 1991, 100% shareholder of Toyota Motor.  Major manufactured car is Lexus,

and annual production volume is 430,000 cars.  Assembly line and Inspection line are visited

at the factory tour.


 

Kawachi Reservoir

The first-class civil construction heritage completed in 1927, the triggered the registration

of World Cultural Heritage of Sites of Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution.  The Kawachi

Reservoir was constructed for the industrial water supply to Yawata Steel Works. The dam

was constructed at the Okura River and upper stream of the dam was expanded and 

making the 7milion cubic metre reservoir.


 

Kawachi Wisteria Garden is a private garden at the Mountain foot of Sarakura and famous for its

spectacularly presented, large numbers of wisteria flowers. The garden is opened to the public

seasonally during the wisteria season which usually peaks around late April to middle of May.

Sakurai Futamigaura

A beautiful sunset scenic spot at Genkai Sea, the place is selected as Japan’s 100 scenic beauty

sunset beach.  Located in Genkai Quasi-National Park. The married rock is connected by the large

Shimenawa with 30 metre length and 1 ton weight. Male rock is 11.8 metre high and Female rock

is 11.2 metre hight.


 

Mataichino shio

The salt making plant by the ancient production method. A salt and a magnesium chloride are

produced with Genkai sea water . 

 

 

 


 

Keya Cave cruise

The most largest basalt cave in Japan consist of octagon and hexagon columnar joints. The entrance

of the cave is 64 metre high and 10 metre width and the depth is 90 metre. It is designated as one of

three major Basalt caves in Japan.

Featured seafood restaurant, Isonoya. Special seafood dish used fresh fishes caught in the

Genkai Sea can be enjoyed.


 

Sake brewery, Suginoya

There is the tasting corner,  let’s sample sake. Sake is unique Japanese liquor made by fermenting

rice.  Suginoya was founded in 1870 in Itoshima.


 

Anego-hama beach

One of the most beautiful beach in Itoshima. Anego-hama beach is a beach of “singing” sand

that makes a squeaking sound when people walk on it. It is said that singing sand exists only

on clean beaches.


 

Raizan Sennyo-ji temple

The temple known for being a great place for cherry blossom viewing in the spring, and many

people visit in the autumn to see the fall foliage. The temple was founded in 725, Nara period

by Seiga, who come from India as a priest during the period. There is an Important Cultural

Property which is the 4.8 meter wooden Avalokitesvara statue in the main hall.

Shiraito Waterfall

The waterfall is located near the source of Katsuki River. It’s 30 meters high. It is known for clear

water, and said to live Sansyouo. In front of the fall, a Banryu maple tree grows naturally that lives

more than 300 years. In autumn, lots of visitors come to see autumn leaves at the pedestrian and

the maple tree leaves.


 

Oyster Barbecue Hut

Itoshima oyster growing up in the rich nature of mountain and sea. There are many Oyster

Barbecue Huts at five fishing harbours. The huts only open during the season, from end of

October to March or April.


 

Ichirano-no mori, Hakata Ramen

Ichiran is an authentic tonkotsu ramen or pork born soup ramen restaurant, established

in 1960.  The ramen producing factory can be visited and various type of ramen can be

enjoyed at Ichiran-no-mori.

Yanagawa

The Beautiful Canal town Yanagawa located about 60km south of Fukuoka-city and is

a former Castle town facing the Ariake Bay and spreading in the Chikugo plain. Canal

boat cruise is most recommended experience.

Yanagawa Canal boat cruise is to board a small boat called the Donkobune and slowly 

go down the river skillfully maneuvered by a boatman with bamboo pole. A 30minutes

cruise starting Okinohata and go around Ohana & Shotoen Garden is most recommended.


 

Ohana and Shotoen Garden

Listed on National Scenic Landmark, was built in 1697 as the villa of the Fourth Lord Tachibana

Akitora. At that time the region was called Hanabatake (Field of flower), so the villa was named

Ohana or Flower.

Yanagawa is the birthplace of Steamed Eel that has more than 300 years history. There are many

restaurants which have their long history and each restaurants have been keeping the traditional

Dazaifu  

Dazaifu is a historical place, about 1300 years ago, in Dazaifu, there was a government office

to manage the entire Kyushu  for a long period of 500 years at the present Dazaifu.

as the Deity of scholarship. The shrine is the headquarter shrine of 12,000 Tenmangu

shrines in Japan.

Shuzo Sake brewery founded in 1890 and Kikubijin Shuzo Sake brewery founded in 1735.


 

Komyozen-ji temple

Site of Dazaifu Government Office

Government site of Ancient Kyushu, Known as TOFURO, the site was used during the Nara

(710 to 794 AD) and Heian (794 to 1185 AD) period. The Dazaifu was responsible for supervising

Japan’s maritime frontier, as well as for administering the nine provinces and two island of the 

Saikaido (modern Kyushu).

Where to explore

 

Kushida Shrine

The most exciting summer festival in Kyushu, Hakata Gion Yamagasa is held in the shrine

in July. The tall Kazari Yamakasa, a luxuriously decorated float, is always displayed which 

was constructed without using even a single nail.


 

Hakata Machiya Furusatokan

It is a folk museum depicts the life and culture of Hakata Fukuoka. Exhibition hall, many faces 

and facets of the Hakata way of life can be found, Machiya hall, is a superb example of

traditional architecture and has been moved here and restored to provide a glimpse into the past.


 

Tochoji Temple

The Temple was founded in 806 by Kobo-daishi Kukai and it is the oldest temple of the Shingon

sect in Japan that  Kobo-daishi set up. The Fukuoka Daibutsu called Great Buddha of Fukuoka

completed in 1993 stands 10.8 meters tall and is the largest seated wooden image of Buddha

in Japan.


 

Kawabata-dori Shopping Street

Japanese traditional Shopping Street where you can find a lot of Cool Japan. The entrance of the

shopping street is located next to Kushida Shrine. Approximately 130 shops built in the 400 metre

arcade. There are also souvenir shops including Hakata dolls, shops collected Hakata Gion

Yamakasa goods. ​Enjoy lunch, Hakata Ramen at the birth place of Nagahama Ramen.


 

Lunch, Ramen Stadium

Ramen Stadium isn’t really a stadium as the name suggests, but a food court on the fifth floor

of Canal City’s Cinema Building. It carries not one, but eight famous ramen stalls that serves

different ramen styles from across Japan. Ramen Stadium has eight ramen stalls with ramen

from Hakata, Kurume, and as far as Tokyo, Kyoto, and Sapporo.

There are many restaurants for lunch and dinner where you can enjoy authentic Japanese cuisines

and local specialties.

 

 

Seaside Momochi

Seaside Momochi is the water-front resort area, only a 15 minute drive from Tenjin in the

centre of Fukuoka-city.  The park is surrounded by Fukuoka Tower and high rise 

contemporary buildings, all of which help make a modern urban landscape. 

 

Fukuoka tower

One of the must visit spots is the 234 metre high Fukuoka Tower. It  is the highest coastal
tower in Japan and is covered with 8000 two way mirrors. The observation room located at
a height of 123m offers a breathtaking and spectacular 360 degree panoramic view of

Momochi Park.


 

Fukuoka Castle Ruins

Fukuoka castle, was built in 1601.  Part of stone wall and canal, and the Tamon tower are

still left intact as they were back then. There is also a nice view of the city from the former

main Parts of the castle’s former moats were used to construct nearby Ohori koen Park.

Yusentei Garden

The Japanese traditional Garden; it was originally built in the 1754 for Kuroda Tsugutaka who was

the lord of Fukuoka clan. You can feel Japanese traditional cultures and enjoy Tea Ceremony.


 

Marine World Uminonakamichi

The aquarium focuses on the aquatic life found around Kyushu. The main tank is a huge, 7 meter deep

pool filled with all different kinds of marine life including over 120 sharks of 20 different varieties. There

are also several outdoor tanks where you can experience feeding dolphins and sea lions.


 

Nokonoshima Island

In the middle of Hakata Bay Beautiful flowers can be enjoyable throughout the year. Rapeseed

blossom, Cherry blossom, Livingstone daisy Poppy, Rhododendro, Marigold, Hydrengea, Plumed 

cockscomb, Dahlia, Sunflower, Cockspur coral tree Bougainvillea, Scarlet sage, Cosmos, Dahlia,

Autumn leaves, Scarlet sage, Japanese narcissus, Japanese camellia, Plum.


 

Marinoa City Fukuoka

Hakata-za

Hakata-za is the theater for Kabuki plays and is located in the Hakata Riverain in Nakasu
It was originally constructed in 1996. Kabuki is one of Japanese traditional stage arts along

Aso & Takachiho 2 days tour

The dynamic nature of Aso and Takachiho where is spreading around Mt. Aso. Mt. Aso is the

largest active volcano in Japan, and is among the largest in the world. Mount Aso has a fairly

large caldera which is one of the largest caldera in the world, 25 km north-south and 18 km

east-west with a circumference of around 120 km, although sources vary on the exact distance. 

The present Aso caldera formed as a result of four huge caldera eruptions occurring over a

range of 90,000 to 300,000 years ago.

built more than 200 years ago. Bake the meat and local ingredients with charcoal at a Japanese

Aso Akaushi beef rice bowl

Aso Akaushi laterally means red beef that is unique in that it has a higher proportion of red meat

with just the right amount of fat, combined with great taste, tenderness and healthiness. Aso Akaushi

beer rice bowl is a local cuisine in Aso consisting of a bowl of rice put in a mildly sweet sauce and

topped with Akaushi beef and egg.


 

Kusasenri-ga-hama

The beautiful prairie of 785,000 square meter in the crater, spreads in northern part of Mt. Eboshi 

that is one of the Aso Five Mountains. A big pond at its center and grazing horses round about make

an idyllic scene.


 

Daikanbo

The perfect spot view the five peak of Mount Aso, Daikanbo literally means a big observatory peak.

The circumference of the Aso caldera is about 130 kilometers. From the observation site, you can

clearly see its conical shape.


 

Kurokawa Onsen

The most popular Onsen resort in Aso region, located on the northern side of Mount Aso.  Widely

known for its open-air baths, it is one of the best places to enjoy the atmosphere of old town in Japan, 

more than 20 Japanese style accommodations and gift shops standing in a row along the river.

Where to explore

 

Located just west of the town center, is nestled in a grove of tall cedars. During the day the

shrine’s nondescript, unpainted buildings blend in naturally with the surrounding trees. In the

evening, you can enjoy the Yokagura Dance.

Somen is a kind of noodle which is made by wheat and is usually eaten by dipping style.
Somen nagashi is the way of eating Somen with waterslide traditionally made by bamboo

like as video below. Nagashi means flowing.

 

 

Takachiho Gorge

A narrow chasm cut through the rock by the Gokase River.  The nearly sheer cliffs lining the

gorge are made of slow forming volcanic basalt columns which resemble the scales of a dragon

where the stone twisted and flowed as it formed.

The most recommended activity at Takachiho Gorge is riding the river that flows down the

base of the gorge on a rental boat.The spot you can see waterfalls and the columnar shaped

valley together is rare in the world. Please enjoy this amazing view from the boat.


 

About ten kilometers outside of central Takachiho the Shrine was built near the cave where

Amaterasu is said to have hid herself away.  The cave cannot be approached, however,

there is an observation deck behind the shrine’s main building.

Gokase Winery is located near Takachiho, in the beautiful plateau at an altitude of 600m.

Takachiho one-day tour

Dynamic and beautiful Takachiho Gorge and here is the birthplace of Shinto which is Japanese

indigenouse religion. Takachiho is located almost center of Kyushu, in the northernmost part of

Miyazaki-prefecture, bordering Aso , Kumamoto-prefectureThe Gokase River formed Takachioho

Gorge flows from the west to the southeast part of town.

In this tour, you can enjoy the dynamic and beautiful nature of Takachioho Gorge and find the roots

Transfer to Takachiho using Kyushu Expressway, 2 hours and 50 minutes 

 Takachiho shrine 

   The shrine has long history, established 1900 years ago, worship the deity of agriculture,

   marriage, traffic safety and protection against misfortunes

 lunch at Takachiho, Somen nagashi

   Somen nagashi is the way of eating Somen with waterslide traditionally made by bamboo

Takachiho Gorge

   Dynamic and beautiful gorge, a narrow chasm cut through the rock by the Gokase River

Where to Explore

 

Takachiho shrine   

Located just west of the town center, is nestled in a grove of tall cedars. During the day the

shrine’s nondescript, unpainted buildings blend in naturally with the surrounding trees. In the

evening, you can enjoy the Yokagura Dance.


 

Lunch , Somen nagashi

Somen is a kind of noodle which is made by wheat and is usually eaten by dipping style.
Somen nagashi is the way of eating Somen with waterslide traditionally made by bamboo

like as video below. Nagashi means flowing.

 

 

Takachiho Gorge 

A narrow chasm cut through the rock by the Gokase River.  The nearly sheer cliffs lining

the gorge are made of slow forming volcanic basalt columns which resemble the scales of

a dragon where the stone twisted and flowed as it formed.

The most recommended activity at Takachiho Gorge is riding the river that flows down the

base of the gorge on a rental boat.The spot you can see waterfalls and the columnar shaped

valley together is rare in the world. Please enjoy this amazing view from the boat.

 

 

Amano Iwato shrine  

Japanese indigenous religion, Shinto born here. There is a story of Shinto origin in the Cave

behind of Amano Iwato Shrine, and Amano Yasugawara. About ten kilometers outside of central TakachihoAmano Iwato Shrine was built near the Cave where is place of the Shinto origin story.

Tourist TramMinami Aso Rail Way

Enjoy the magnificent scenery of Aso. The Minami Aso railway is a private railroad offering

a very scenic ride from Takamori to Nakamatsu in the south east of the caldera. Lovely and

magnificent scenery can be enjoyed.

 


 

Gokase Winery

Gokase Winery is located near Takachiho, in the beautiful plateau at an altitude of 600m.All the

wines are being made from locally grown grapes. There is the tasting corner, you can enjoy

sample wines. Winery also can be visited.

Yufuin & Beppu Onsen 2 days tour

Exploring the most recommended Onsen Resorts Beppu and Yufuin.  Two Onsen Resorts

are located in Oita-prefecture, and have different fascinating features. Oita-prefecture is on

the north-eastern area of Kyushu and a representative Onsen Resort area in Japan, total

boasting hot spring sources and hot spring flowing volume are both Japan’s largest.

Kokonoe Yume Otsurihashi

The longest pedestrian suspension bridge in Japan and the 2nd longest in the World

Splendid and beautiful view from the thrilling sunpension bridge over the Naruko river valley.


 

Yufuin

A beautiful and tranquil Onsen Resort, Yufuin is located about 15 km west of Beppu and is spreading

in the Yufu basin at the mountain foot of Yufu. 

 


 

Yunotsubo Avenue

Main street in Yufuin located at the foot of mount Yufu. The avenue is started near JR Yufuin

Station and connected to Kinrinko lake. Through Yunotsubo Avenue, it takes about 30 minutes

on foot from JR Yufuin Station to Kinrinko lake. There are 70 shops, gift shop, galleries, curiosity

item shops as well as cafes.


 

Yufuin Floral Village

Floral Village is the amusement facility that recreated the street of the Cotswolds region in England,

which was also used as the location for Harry Potter. Cute owls welcome you in OWL’s FORESR.

You can enjoy strolling, gourmet and shopping with beautiful flowers in the Village, and there is

Alice in Wonderland shop here.


 

Kinrinko lake

One of landmark in Yufuin. Hot water gushes from the bottom of the lake, and hot steam rises

from its surface on a cold day.  The lake is located at the end of the town’s main walking route,

about a kilometer and a half from the Yufuin station.

Yufumabushi

Yufumabushi is a local cuisine which serves really nice BUNGO Beef. But surprisingly, the way

they serve beef is not BBQ or SUKIYAKI style that are seen in most cases, but “Yufumabushi

 ” style which we rarely see for beef dish.

In the harvest time, the northern Kyushu boasts many area with beautiful fruit orchards. Fukuoka

is one of the leading fruit-producing prefecture in all Japan. The fruit production in Fukuoka is

primarily concentrated in the southern Chikugo region such as Ukiha, Asakura and Tanushimaru.

 


 

Kuju Flower Park

The Park offers stunning seasonal displays of flowers set against beautiful mountain scenery.

Over 3 million flowers in 500 different varieties from spring to late autumn. The park covers 49

acres of the beautiful Kuju plateau, the Kuju mountain range making a stunning alpine back

drop and the sleeping buddha of Mount Aso, a vista in the distance.

Where to explore

 

Beppu

The popular hot spring town nestle at the foot of volcanos, Mt. Yufu and Mt. Tsurumi. Boasting

more than 2,800 hot spring sources and flowing rate of nearly 137,000 kiloliters per day.

 


 

Beppu Hell tour 

Hell (Jigoku Meguri ) tour that is a collection of hot spring where the water bubbles forth from 
underground, often with unusual result.  Seven of the hells are located in the Kannawa district
where over 4 km northwest of Beppu station, and two in the more remote Shibaseki district.  
 

Umi Jigoku

Sea Hell, it resemble of sea, this 200 metre deep, cobalt blue pond of boiling water emerge

1200 years ago after a volcano explosion.


   

Oniishi Bozu Jigoku 

Oniishi shaving Head Hell, large and small bubble of hot gray mud that boiling up here look

like the shaven head of monks.

 

 

Chi-no-ike Jigoku 

Blood Pull Hell, the clay is steaming hot point that the steam is red. Japan’s oldest natural
Jigoku as written about in the Bungo Topography described as Akayusen, a reddish hot spring.


 

Foot bath

Have you tried Foot bath before?  Foot bath is called Ashiyu in Japanese and is a public bath in
which people can bath their feet. Ashiyu in Beppu set up at Kannawa Onsen near the Hell tour spot.

Jigoku Mushi kobo

Jigoku Mushi, literally “hell-steaming” is a unique cooking method found in Beppu. The ingredients

such as vegetables, seafood and meals are cooked using the steam from natural hot spring.

You can operate the steam cookers all by yourself and you can cook whatever you want.

Mount Tsurumi

Soaring 1375 metres into the sky, Mount Tsurumi is a breathtaking mountain overlooking Beppu

that offers some decent hiking, rare flora and outstanding vistas. Visitors can take a ropeway 800

metres up and revel in being surrounded by acres of rolling greenery. You can see as far as the

Kuju Mountains, a famous mountain range that runs between Oita and Kumamoto-prefectures.

 

 

Takasaki mountain animal park

About 1700 wild Japanese monkey are living in the park. The monkeys are fed regularly

by park wardens in order to keep them on the mountain and prevent conflicts with farmers

and residents in the neighborhood.

 


 

Harajiri Waterfall

It is called Niagara Falls of Japan, In the Ogata River, running through the center of the Ogata plain.

The falls, 120 meters wide and 20 meters hight, are selected as one of the best 100 falls in Japan.

Lava flows produced by the great eruption of Mt. Aso accumulated and chighreated Harajiri Falls.

 


 

Onsen Hoyo land

The Onsen is a public bath located in Myoban Onsen Resort. This place is known by its mud

looks like a cream, and is rarely found in Japan. The mud has an excellent skin beautifying

effect. The outdoor mud is a mixed-gender bath.

Where to explore  

 

Peace Park

Established in 1955 near the Ground Zero where the Atomic Bomb was dropped at 11:02 am

on Aug. 09, 1945. Peace Memorial Ceremony is held in front of the statue on August 9 every

year and the Mayor of Nagasaki makes the “Nagasaki peace declaration” for the whole world.

 

Atomic Bomb Museum

The museum exhibits a number of photograph that depict the devastation caused by atomic

bomb showing the lead-up to this tragic day, the history of the development of nuclear arms

and our desire for peace.


 

Ground Zero

The plutonium atomic bomb exploded about 500m over the central monument at 11:02 a.m.on

August 9, 1945.  The most part of Nagasaki was destroyed, and a tremendous number of lives

were lost. And about 70,000 of Nagasaki’s 240,000 residents died instantly, and up to 60,000

were injured. 


 

Peace Statue

Completed in 1955, ten years after the atomic bombing. The 9.7 meter high statue sitting on

a 4 meter tall pedestal, made by renown sculptor Kitamura Seibo. The raised arm points to

the threat of nuclear weapons and the out-stretched arm symbolizes peace.


 

Glover Garden  / UNESCO World Heritage Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution

Located on Minami-Yamate hill in Nagasaki-city, Glover Garden has nine Western style buildings

including the Glover’s Residence built in 1863 and is Japan’s oldest wooden Westernstyle building

registered on the UNESCO World Heritage. The elegant scenery of Nagasaki harbor view from

Glover Garden can be enjoyed. 


 

Oura Cathedral / UNESCO World Heritage Hidden Christian sites

The Cathedral is one of the significant Christian Pilgrimage site in Japan.  Established 1865, this

church is officially known as “Oura Cathedral, the Church of 26 Martyrs.”  It was built by the French

priest Bernard Petitjean of Fier who had been dispatched by the Foreign Missionary Church of

Paris to dedicate prayers to the 26 saints martyred on Nishizaka hill.

Nagaaski Wharf

China Town

Nagasaki China town at shinchi is one of the big three china town in JapanThere are about 50

Chinese restaurants and many Chinese sundries shops in there.

   


 

Dejima 

Dejima was the fan-shaped artificial island in the bay of Nagasaki where was used as a Dutch

trading port and it was only open gateway to Europe during Japan’s National isolation of Edo

period from 1641 until 1853. At that time, many European technologies and cultures were

introduced here through Dutch.


 

Mount Inasa

It is a 333 meter high mountain in close distance to JR Nagasaki Station. The summit can be

reached by ropeway or car and offers great views over the city. And also, the magnificent night

views from Mount Inasa are ranked among Japan’s three best night views.

Martyrdom of the 26 Saints of Japan     

Nishizaka hill is the most significant Christian Pilgrimage site in Japan. The 26 Martyrs of Japan

were a group of Catholics who were executed by rucifixion on February 5, 1597.Their martyrdom

is especially significant in the history of the Catholic Church in Japan. In 1637, St. Lorenzo Luiz

from Philippines martyred here at Nishizaka hill.


 

The museum behind the monument is devoted to the memory of the martyrs and to Christianity in

Japan in general. Its interior is reminiscent of a church with stained-glass windows, making for

atmospheric viewing of the exhibits. On display are artifacts related to Christianity in Japan,

including old documents, statues and jewelry.


 

Confucius Shrine

The world’s only Confucian shrine built outside China by Chinese hands. First built in 1893 by

Chinese residents of Nagasaki with the support of the Ch’ing Dynasty government, the shrine

was designed to serve as a place of worship and learning for the Chinese community, and

housed a Confucian sanctuary and primary school. 


 

Megane-bashi bridge

The oldest stone arch bridge in Japan, Meganebashi or Spectacles Bridge, over the Nakashima

River was built in Nagasaki in 1634 by the Chinese monk Mokusunyoujo who is a second

generation of Chinese monks living at Kofukuji Temple.


 

Hashima Coal Mine  /  Gunkan-jima island cruise

Hashima coal mining island is an artificial reclaimed island and the site of Japan’s first major

undersea coal exploitation pioneered by Mitsubishi. Hashima Island is located 3 km southwest of

Takashima. Now Hashima is a ruins called “Gunkanjima”, so called after its resemblance to the

silhouette of a battleship.
