The Handa kogen Plateau is located in the southern part of Kokonoe-cho, Kusu-gun.

Altitude is 800 to 1,200 m. By the opening of the Yamanami Highway in 1964, the area

became a nice sightseeing spot connected to Beppu Onsen and Yufuin in the north and

Nakatsu & Yabakei travel guide

 

Nakatsu is a small city on the north coast of Oita-prefecture, just east of its

border with Fukuoka-prefecture.

During the Edo Period of Japanese history, Nakatsu was a mid-sized domain,

and the town itself has recently expanded to include outlying towns and districts

and now comprises almost 500 square kilometers with a population of almost 85,000.

Since ancient time the Kunisaki peninsula has been home of Kyushu’s prominent Usa Shrine,

influencing the surrounding hills and valleys with Buddhist culture. Although this is a Shinto shrine,

Kunisaki peninsula began to develop 1,300 years ago as a sacred religious ground influenced by  mountain and nature worship, Buddhism, and

Usa shrine rising in the region.  Here remains in Bungo-takada city the historical

background for “home of prayer” consecrating a mass the Shinto deity, Buddha, 

and ancestral spirit. And one of major industry is agriculture and entire area of

Exploring Kunisaki Peninsula

 

Showa no machi

The era that lasted till about 30 years ago in Japanese history, Bungo Takada was

the most prosperous in Kunisaki Peninsula for over 300 years from the Edo period up to 1900.
Here remains various old structures and remnants of regional Japanese.

 


 

Fuki-ji Temple

The temple is a Tendai Buddhist temple located on the slopes of Mount Futago. The temple was

established in 718 and the temple building is the oldest extant wooden structure in Kyushu.

Tashibu-no-sho

This district was once considered the most important estate of Usa Shrine. It has been ascertained

from ancient documents that the rural landscape seen today has remained unchanged since Heian

period. Now included this are, Kunisaki peninsula is listed on the World Agricultural Heritage.

Kumano magaibutu

Hewn in a rock Mt. Tahara are two of largest Buddhist stone carvings in all Japan.   A Fudo-myu-o

8 meter in heigt and Dainich-nyurai 6.8 meter height. Said to have been carved in the Heian period,

they have received government designation as Important Cultural Properties.

Futago-ji Temple

The Central temple of Rokugo-Manzan in Kunisaki peninsula.

The temple was established in 718 by Ninmon and located close to the peak of Mount Futago.

Futagoji’s grounds cover a wide area on the forested slopes of the mountain, with stone and

gravel paths and stairs connecting several halls housing various deities.

The temple houses nine Buddhists images said to be masterpieces of the Heian period,

including the Maki-Odo Seated Amida Nyorai (Amitabha). Figure and statues of the Four Devas.

Karatsu and Yobuko, located on the Higashi Matsuura Peninsula in the northwestern

part of Saga-prefecture, have been prosperous from ancient times as an important point for

trade with Mainland China.

Karatsu is a part of Genkai Quasi-National Park, and has many scenic spots.

Karatsu Castle is called Dancing Crane Castle

The Castle, which stands beside Karatsu Bay, is unusual in that the stonework rises directly

out of the water, using the ocean as a natural moat.

 


 

Kagamiyama Mountain

The height is 284 metre from sea level and top of the mountain is flat and wide geographical

feature.

The area is famous for cherry blossom and azalea flower in spring season.

It is a Shinto shrine located about 1 km west of Karatsu Castle and the original shrine was

founded in 755.

Kashima travel guide

 

Kashima is located about 60 kilometers southwest of Saga City.

It borders the Ariake Sea to the east and Nagasaki Prefecture to the southwest.

Yutoku Inari Shrine

One of the most famous Inari shrines in Japan and located in Kashima-city, Saga-prefecture.

Dedicated to Inari, the deity whose messengers are foxes, it is the third largest of its kind

in Japan. It was constructed in 1688 as the family shrine of the Nabeshima clan who ruled

what would become the Saga area during the Edo period.

Saga-city travel guide

 

Saga-city in Kyushu is the seat of the Saga-prefectural government.

It faces the Ariake Sea on the south and is home to Saga Airport. In the center of the city is

the Saga Castle History Museum, which also serves as the city’s symbol. The castle itself is

no longer standing, but the main keep has been reconstructed, resulting in one of the largest

wooden structures in Japan.

 

Saga is also known as the plece where it has made a great contribution to the Japanese

Industrial Revolution.

The largest restored wooden building in Japan at 2,500m2, the museum offers the

The shrine dedicated to Naomasa Nabeshima, who oversaw the manufacture of Japan’s

Mietsu Naval Dock  UNESCO World Heritage

UNESCO World Heritage, Site of Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution

Before Meiji Restoration, the Mietsu Naval Dock served as a venue for naval drilling and

maintenance of Western-style ship, as the naval base of Saga Clan.

Japan’s first practical steam ship, the Ryofu-maru was constructed there in 1865.

 

     

 

Tsukiji Reflectance Furnace

This is the Japan’s first constructed Reflectance Furnace and it was used for Japan’s first

Cannon manufacturing.

The reflectance furnace was greatly contributed for initial stage of Japan’s Industrial

Modernization.

 

     

 

Yoshinogari Remains

The largest archeological remains in Japan.

Lie on the spacious hilly area in the northeastern part of Saga. Remains of a ringed-dugout

settlement presumably dating back to the 3rd century B.C. were unearthed there, and

excavation is still underway at the site.

 


 

Saga International Balloon Fiesta

The largest hot air balloon competition in all of Asia with over 100 participating balloon teams

Located in Yoshii-machi, Shirakabe, literary meaning is white wall. The avenue of houses with

white wall were constructed about 100 years ago.  About 250 houses in the area has been designated

Yame is a city of Japanese Tea and Traditional Crafts

 

Located in the southern part of Fukuoka-prefecture, Yame grew in size after the merger

with Kurogi town,Tachibana town,Yabe village,Hoshino village in 2010.

Yame Fukushima

White-walled townscape

The Fukushima area is designated as an important traditional buildings preservation

area by the Japanese government. Since the Edo Era (1603 – 1868), the area has flourished as

an economical and political base, and many merchant houses which retain the atmosphere of that

time remain even today, mainly in the towns of Miyano, Kyo, and Furumatsu.

 


 

Sake Brewery Kiyaya

Kitaya is renowned Saka brewer in Yame,was founded some 190 years ago during the Edo Era.

The Sake is produced using high-grade rice if brewing quality rice of brewing

cultivated in Fukuoka-prefecture. The Brewery can be visited and enjoy sampling Sake.

 


 

Yame Central Tea Plantation  

The country of Green Tea, the Green Tea grown in Yame is one of the highest grade of tea throughout

Japan. This is the large Tea plantation spreading on a gently sloping hilly area, about 70 ha.

There is an observatory at the top of hill, Ariake bay as well as Shimabara Peninsula in

Nagasaki-prefecture can be seen on sunny days.

The restaurant Ginnoka uses Japanese old style house built 100 years ago,

and located next to the Sake brewery Kitaya.

The restaurant opened in 2014 and serving Japanese cuisines which is compatible

with Sake using local abundant ingredients such as vegetables, fruits and fresh river and sea fishes.

Kurogi large Wisteria tree

The tree is more than 600 years old

The total area of its scaffolding structure at 3,000 square meters and its longest flower

clusters measuring in at 150 centimeters, the tree looks truly spectacular when it blooms.

The Wisteria Festival takes place between mid-April and early May.
