Yame is a city of Japanese Tea and Traditional Crafts

Located in the southern part of Fukuoka-prefecture, Yame grew in size after the merger

with Kurogi town,Tachibana town,Yabe village,Hoshino village in 2010.

Yame Fukushima

White-walled townscape

The Fukushima area is designated as an important traditional buildings preservation

area by the Japanese government. Since the Edo Era (1603 – 1868), the area has flourished as

an economical and political base, and many merchant houses which retain the atmosphere of that

time remain even today, mainly in the towns of Miyano, Kyo, and Furumatsu.


 

Sake Brewery Kiyaya

Kitaya is renowned Saka brewer in Yame,was founded some 190 years ago during the Edo Era.

The Sake is produced using high-grade rice if brewing quality rice of brewing

cultivated in Fukuoka-prefecture. The Brewery can be visited and enjoy sampling Sake.


 

Yame Central Tea Plantation  

The country of Green Tea, the Green Tea grown in Yame is one of the highest grade of tea throughout

Japan. This is the large Tea plantation spreading on a gently sloping hilly area, about 70 ha.

There is an observatory at the top of hill, Ariake bay as well as Shimabara Peninsula in

Nagasaki-prefecture can be seen on sunny days.


 

Featured Japanese restaurant Ginnoka

The restaurant Ginnoka uses Japanese old style house built 100 years ago,

and located next to the Sake brewery Kitaya.

The restaurant opened in 2014 and serving Japanese cuisines which is compatible

with Sake using local abundant ingredients such as vegetables, fruits and fresh river and sea fishes.


 

Hoshino village

The most beautiful village in Japan

Located in the southeastern part of Fukuoka Prefecture, and east side of Yame-city,

at altitudes between 200 and 1,000 metres above sea level.

As 84 percent of the village is covered with mountain forests, agriculture and forestry

are the two main industries.

Kurogi large Wisteria tree

The tree is more than 600 years old

The total area of its scaffolding structure at 3,000 square meters and its longest flower

clusters measuring in at 150 centimeters, the tree looks truly spectacular when it blooms.

The Wisteria Festival takes place between mid-April and early May.

Ukiha travel guide

 

Ukiha blessed with nature where many orchards spread out at the 

foot of Mino mountain range.

Yoshii, in the center of Chikugo flourished as a post town during the Edo period, and there a

lot of Sake brewery which have established the Edo period. A fruits picking and Sake brewery

visit can be enjoyed here.

Shirakabe-dori Avenue

Time-honored scenery, back to 100 years ago. Located in Yoshii-machi, Shirakabe, literary

meaning is white wall. The avenue of houses with white wall were constructed about 100 years

ago.  About 250 houses in the area has been designated as National important raditional buildings

preservation district.


 

Featured Restaurant, Shirakabe

The restaurant Shirakabe is in the former merchant’s building constructed in 1928. Japanese

cuisines using best local ingredients that vary by season can be enjoyed. The chef who makes

that cuisines also experienced the imperial family’s cook.


 

Ukiha Inari Shrine

Breath taking scenery harmonizes with the Shrine. Ukiha Inari Shrine, located at foot of Mino

mountain range, 130 m height from sea level. The 90 vermilion coloured Torii Gates stand on

the 300 steps stairs is introduced you from bottom area to the Shrine main building.

Asakura travel guide

 

It is a thriving area of agriculture in Chikugo region, Fukuoka-prefecture  where has rich nature

and many historical heritages. And also there is a Onsen Resort along the Chikugo River.

The modern city of Asakura was established on March 20, 2006, from the merger of the former town

of Asakura, absorbing the city of Amagi, and the town of Haki. Asakura is located in south central

Fukuoka Prefecture and is spreading in the Chikugo plains of the Chikugo River basin which is the

big river in Kyushu.

 


 

Akizuki

Akizuki is a former Castle town located in northern part of Asakura.

You can enjoy the harmony of countryside landscape and former castle town scenery

that makes the atmosphere like a time of 400 years ago.

Harazuru Onsen 

A tranquil Onsen Resort near Fukuoka-city and is located on the banks of Chikugo River. 

The quality hot spring is weakly alkaline and sulfur is mixed and has the effect of dropping

old horn and creating beautiful skin.

Asakura Triple Water Wheel

Asakura is the only area in Japan to use water wheels for irrigation. The irrigation system used the

Triple Water Wheel was completed in 1760. The water is supplied from Yamada weir in Chikugo 

through the canal to the Triple Water Wheel. And then the water distributed to each rice field by

Triple Water Wheel.

Only here in Japan,  the stone-covered Weir constructed.

Yamada weir is a construction for the irrigation system that water is supplied from Yamada weir

in Chikugo through the canal to the Triple Water Wheel to rice field.

The large and small stones are stacked against water flow, and leads water to the irrigation

canal while suppressing the momentum of the Chikugo River.

Toho Village

Toho is a small village with a population of about 2,000 people and consist of two districts. 

Hoshuyama district, a mountain area blessed with nature Koisiwara district, pottery industry

representative of Kyushu.


 

Tachiarai Peace Memorial Museum   

The main exhibit room displays a few letters and other items of kamikaze pilots who died in battle.

One case has photos of about 50 kamikaze pilots from Tachiarai Air Base and includes the following

information on each pilot: name, unit, plane used, date of death, and air base of final sortie.

The Handa kogen Plateau is located in the southern part of Kokonoe-cho, Kusu-gun.

Altitude is 800 to 1,200 m. By the opening of the Yamanami Highway in 1964, the area

became a nice sightseeing spot connected to Beppu Onsen and Yufuin in the north and

Aso in the south.

Kunisaki peninsula travel guide

Kunisaki peninsula began to develop 1,300 years ago as a sacred religious ground influenced by  mountain and nature worship, Buddhism, and

Usa shrine rising in the region.  Here remains in Bungo-takada city the historical

background for “home of prayer” consecrating a mass the Shinto deity, Buddha, 

and ancestral spirit. And one of major industry is agriculture and entire area of

Exploring Kunisaki Peninsula

Showa no machi

The era that lasted till about 30 years ago in Japanese history, Bungo Takada was

the most prosperous in Kunisaki Peninsula for over 300 years from the Edo period up to 1900.
Here remains various old structures and remnants of regional Japanese.


 

Fuki-ji Temple

The temple is a Tendai Buddhist temple located on the slopes of Mount Futago. The temple was

established in 718 and the temple building is the oldest extant wooden structure in Kyushu.

Tashibu-no-sho

This district was once considered the most important estate of Usa Shrine. It has been ascertained

from ancient documents that the rural landscape seen today has remained unchanged since Heian

period. Now included this are, Kunisaki peninsula is listed on the World Agricultural Heritage.

Kumano magaibutu

Hewn in a rock Mt. Tahara are two of largest Buddhist stone carvings in all Japan.   A Fudo-myu-o

8 meter in heigt and Dainich-nyurai 6.8 meter height. Said to have been carved in the Heian period,

they have received government designation as Important Cultural Properties.

Futago-ji Temple

The Central temple of Rokugo-Manzan in Kunisaki peninsula.

The temple was established in 718 by Ninmon and located close to the peak of Mount Futago.

Futagoji’s grounds cover a wide area on the forested slopes of the mountain, with stone and

gravel paths and stairs connecting several halls housing various deities.

Makino odo

The temple houses nine Buddhists images said to be masterpieces of the Heian period,

including the Maki-Odo Seated Amida Nyorai (Amitabha). Figure and statues of the Four Devas.

All are designated as important national cultural properties.

Usa & Ajimu travel guide

 

Usa area including Ajimu are located at the base of Kunisaki peninsula and spreading

around Usa Shrine.

Since ancient time the Kunisaki peninsula has been home of Kyushu’s prominent Usa Shrine,

influencing the surrounding hills and valleys with Buddhist culture. Although this is a Shinto shrine,

it has long been holy ground to both Shinto and Buddhist activities, and the Kunisaki Mountains 

and valleys were often chosen by monks as practice ground for meditation.

 


 

Exploring Usa & Ajimu

Usa Shrine

The head shrine of Hachiman Shrine that is composed 44,000 shrines that dedicated to the Hachiman Deity.

Emperor Ojin, who was deified as Hachiman-jin  (the tutelary god of warriors), is said to be
enshrined in all the sites dedicated to him; and the first and earliest of these was at Usa in the
early 8th century. The Shrine is was founded in 727.

A beautiful and tranquil Onsen Resort representing Kyushu

Yufuin is located about 15 km west of Beppu and is spreading in the Yufu basin at the mountain foot

of Yufu. Onsen Resort life can be enjoyed at the beautiful and tranquil place harmonized with nature

in the basin of mountain hill area

 


 

Where to explore 

Kinrinko lake

One of landmark in Yufuin. Hot water gushes from the bottom of the lake, and hot steam rises from its

surface on a cold day.  The lake is located at the end of the town’s main walking route, about a kilometer 

and a half from the Yufuin station.


 

Shitan-yu

The old public outdoor bath with a thatched roof beside Kinrinko lake in Yufuin.  The bathing here is mixed,

as baths often were before the arrival, during the Meiji period ( 1869 – 1912).

Reproduced the townscape of the Cotswold region in England. The place was also used for

Kawabata-dori Shopping Street

 

The most historical and traditional shopping street in Hakata

 

The entrance of the shopping street is located next to Kushida Shrine.

Approximately 130 shops built in the 400 metre arcade.

 

There are also souvenir shops including Hakata dolls, shops collected Hakata Gion

Yamakasa goods, restaurants included Ramen shop where the birth place of Nagahama Ramen.

 

On the weekend, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, various events are held at the Event square.

Beppu is one of the most famous Onsen Resort in Japan

A destination to be visited when travelling northern Kyushu

The popular hot spring town nestle at the foot of volcanos, Mount Yufu and Mount Tsurumi.

Takasaki mountain animal park

About 1700 wild Japanese monkey are living in the park.

The monkeys are fed regularly by park wardens in order to keep them on the mountain and

prevent conflicts with farmers and residents in the neighborhood.
