Sengan-en
Sengan-en is the most famous garden in Kagoshima-ken, made by Shimazu lord in the 19th
century at the beautiful bayside Kinko bay. The garden contains many historic artifacts that
tell of its long history.

World Heritage, Meiji Japan’s Industrial Revolution
Shoko Shuseikan Modern Industrial Complex. The museum of the Classics located here exhibits
a various of objests related to the Shimazu family and the Satsuma domain, introducing a Shimazu
family tree chart and many other belongings.

Ryugu Shrine
Ryugu Shrine is located at Nagasaki-bana Cape, the southernmost point of Satsuma peninsula.
Nagasaki-bana Cape is said to be the birthplace of the legend of Urashima Taro who saved a turtle,
it took him to Ryugu-jo (the Palace of the Dragon as a token of it’s gratitude). Sea turtles come
to lay eggs on the beach near this place, and local people love them as the protective god of the sea.

The new worship hall of the shrine was built in 2011. The name of popular limited express for
sightseeing “Ibusuki-tamate-bako” is associated with the legend of Urashima Taro. Tamate-bako
is a box Otohime gave to Urashima Taro. This shrine is becoming popular as a power spot of
matchmaking and good fortune in love. There are shells in a big pot. It is said that if you write
your wish on a shell and dedicate it, your wish will be granted.

Nagasaki-bana Cape in Satsuma peninsula
Nagasaki-bana Cape is the southernmost point of the Satsuma Peninsula. A walking path
leads from a small cluster of souvenir shops to the tip of the cape where there stands a white
lighthouse.

A highlight of a visit to the cape are the views of nearby Mount Kaimondake, which stands
924 meters above sea level. Because of its conical shape, it bears a striking resemblance to
Mount Fuji and is often referred to as “Satsuma Fuji”.

Nishi-Oyama Station
Nishi-Oyama Station is the southernmost railway station in Japan operated by JR, boasts
a breathtaking view of Kaimon-dake volcano to the front.

Kirishima travel guide
Located in the northeastern part of Kagoshima and is the entrance to the Kirishima district of Kirishima Yaku National Park, which includes the Kirishima volcanic chain, Sakura-jima Island
and Yaku shima Islands.
Where to explore
One of the most beautiful shrine in Kyushu, and is surrounded by forest. The Shrine buildings are
constructed in 1715 and designated as Important Cultural Property of Japan.

Black Vinegar factory in Kirishima
