Situated roughly in the center of Kumamoto Prefecture, is the government and
economic center of the prefecture. From the early 17th century to the end of the
19th century, Kumamoto was prosperous as a castle town.
Josaien is located in Sakurano-baba, at the foot of Kumamoto Castle, one of Japan’s
three major castles. It is a popular tourist attraction designed to enhance the appeal
of the old castle town and convey to visitors the food, history and cultural traditions of
the region from Kumamoto Castle, a symbol of the Kumamoto-city.

The Castle is one of the three great castles and one of the 100 best places in Japan to view cherry
blossoms. Due to the Earthquakes in 2016, the Castle have heavey damages and many of Castle
buildings were destroyed. After that the restoration activities are being performed as fast as possible
and now Kumamoto Castle can be seen from the outside of the moats surrounding the castle.

Where to explore
The Satsuma Peninsula which projects south from the southwest part of Kyushu.
To the west lies the East China Sea, while to the east it faces the Osumi Peninsula
across Kagoshima Bay. Near the southern tip of the peninsula is the 924-metre Mount
Kaimon and the hot springs of Ibusuki Hot Spring.
It is the Urashima Taro legendary shrine peninsula and this shrine is becoming popular as a power spot
of matchmaking and good fortune in love.

The cape is the southernmost point of Satsuma peninsula, where a white lighthouse stands.
You can enjoy the view of the magnificent Mount Kaimondake and rocks with the sea spray
wearing them. The Cape is said to be the birthplace of the legend of Ryugu.

A circumference of 15 km and a maximum depth of 233 meter, where was created by volcanic
activity long ago. Large eel with a length of 2 meter and circumference of 50 cm inhabit the lake.

Called a small Kyoto in Kagoshima, offer you a fine collection of Samurai houses and gardens
and Chiran Peace Museum for the Kamikaze Pilots.
Those Samurai Houses were built about 250 years ago. Their gardens are beautiful
desighned, with Mt. Hahaga-dake as the background. Other natural elements are
also incorporated, making the whole area resemble a scries of miniture of Japanese
gardens housed in boxes. Seven of the gardens are designated as natural scenic spots.

Chiran Peace Museum for the Kamikaze Pilots
This museum exhibits precious materials such as pictures, letters, wills, articles and
memontos of the 1,036 Kamikaze pilots based in Chiran who perticipated in the Battle for
Okinawa towards the end of World War 2. It also houses a No.3 type fighter aircraft, Hien.

Kagoshima-city is the southernmost major city in Kyushu which can see Sakura-jima Island
which raises the smoke across the Kagoshima Bay. Kagoshima prospered in the Edo period
as a castle town.
Sengan-en / UNESCO World Heritage
Sengan-en is the most famous garden in Kagoshima-ken, made by Shimazu lord in the
19th century at the beautiful bayside Kinko bay. The garden contains many historic artifacts
that tell of its long history.

The museum of the Classics located here exhibits a various of objests related to the Shimazu

Sakura-jima Ferry connects Kagoshima-city and Sakura-jima Island in 15 minutes
and is operated for 24 hours.

Where to explore
One of the most beautiful shrine in Kyushu, and is surrounded by forest. The Shrine buildings
are constructed in 1715 and designated as Important Cultural Property of Japan.

Facing the Pacific Ocean with a beautiful coastline contains placed of natural beauty,
like Aoshima and Toi-misaki Cape.
Wild horses are living here. Gentle hills extend, and you can observe wild horses, called
Misaki-uma, living and grazing there. It is said that the Misaki-uma are the descendants of
army horses left grazing and which became wild 300 years ago.

In legend, a goddess of sea built a hut to give birth to a great god here.

The moss-covered stone walls, broad stone steps in front of the Ote-mon main gate, moat ruin,
and old samurai residences all bring back the past. The Matsuo-no-Maru residence and Ote-mon

Where to explore
A bay city, facing the Hyuga nada Sea. The whole area along Hyuga Cape with its many
exposed rocks is designated as the Nippo-Kaigan Quasi-National Park. Umagase at the
top of Hyuga Cape is a precipitous cliff of pillar-like rock, towering as high as 70m.
Your dream come true here. The Cruz Sea is an area of ocean that appears to have a cross
in it when viewed from an observatory. This cape is known as a ria coast; the “cross shape”
was created by the narrow terrain here being eroded by rivers, resulting in a cross-shaped
sea route.

Where to explore
Takachiho offers dynamic and powerful Takachiho Gorge and birthplace of Shinto which is
Japanese indigenouse religion. It is the supposed site of legend where Amaterasu, the Shrine
Sun Goddess, disturbed by her brother’s cruel pranks, hid herself in a cave, prompting the
other gods and goddesses to try and lure her out.

There is a story of Shinto origin in the Cave behind of Amano Iwato Shrine, and Amano
Yasugawara. About ten kilometers outside of central Takachiho, Amano Iwato Shrine

The aquarium focuses on the aquatic life found around Kyushu. The main tank is a huge,
seven meter deep pool filled with all different kinds of marine life including over 120 sharks
of 20 different varieties. There are also several outdoor tanks where you can experience
feeding dolphins and sea lions.

Ramen Stadium isn’t really a stadium as the name suggests, but a food court on the fifth floor
of Canal City’s Cinema Building. It carries not one, but eight famous ramen stalls that serves

7:30 to 12:00, every day at just next to Yobuko Port. The street of 200 m borrowed from the

Established in 1955 near the Ground Zero where the Atomic Bomb was dropped at 11:02 am on
Aug. 09, 1945. Peace Memorial Ceremony is held in front of the statue on August 9 every
year and the Mayor of Nagasaki makes the “Nagasaki peace declaration” for the whole world.
The museum exhibits a number of photograph that depict the devastation caused by atomic
bomb showing the lead-up to this tragic day, the history of the development of nuclear arms
and our desire for peace.
The plutonium atomic bomb exploded about 500m over the central monument at 11:02 a.m.
on August 9, 1945. The most part of Nagasaki was destroyed, and a tremendous number of
lives were lost. And about 70,000 of Nagasaki’s 240,000 residents died instantly, and up to
60,000 were injured.
Completed in 1955, ten years after the atomic bombing. The 9.7 meter high statue sitting on
a 4 meter tall pedestal, made by renown sculptor Kitamura Seibo. The raised arm points to the
threat of nuclear weapons and the out-stretched arm symbolizes peace.

The Cathedral is one of the significant Christian Pilgrimage site in Japan. Established 1865, this
church is officially known as “Oura Cathedral, the Church of 26 Martyrs.” It was built by the French
priest Bernard Petitjean of Fier who had been dispatched by the Foreign Missionary Church of
Paris to dedicate prayers to the 26 saints martyred on Nishizaka hill.
Located on Minami-Yamate hill in Nagasaki-city, Glover Garden has nine Western style buildings
including the Glover’s Residence built in 1863 and is Japan’s oldest wooden Western–style building
registered on the UNESCO World Heritage. The elegant scenery of Nagasaki harbor view from
Glover Garden can be enjoyed.

Dejima was the fan-shaped artificial island in the bay of Nagasaki where was used as a Dutch
trading port and it was only open gateway to Europe during Japan’s National isolation of Edo
period from 1641 until 1853. At that time, many European technologies and cultures were

It is a 333 meter high mountain in close distance to JR Nagasaki Station. The summit can be reached
by ropeway or car and offers great views over the city. And also, the magnificent night views from

Martyrdom of the 26 Saints of Japan
Nishizaka hill is the most significant Christian Pilgrimage site in Japan. The 26 Martyrs of Japan
were a group of Catholics who were executed by rucifixion on February 5, 1597.Their martyrdom
is especially significant in the history of the Catholic Church in Japan. In 1637, St. Lorenzo Luiz
from Philippines martyred here at Nishizaka hill.
The museum behind the monument is devoted to the memory of the martyrs and to Christianity in
Japan in general. Its interior is reminiscent of a church with stained-glass windows, making for
atmospheric viewing of the exhibits. On display are artifacts related to Christianity in Japan,
including old documents, statues and jewelry.
The world’s only Confucian shrine built outside China by Chinese hands. First built in 1893 by
Chinese residents of Nagasaki with the support of the Ch’ing Dynasty government, the shrine
was designed to serve as a place of worship and learning for the Chinese community, and
housed a Confucian sanctuary and primary school.
Hashima Coal Mine / Gunkan-jima island cruise
Hashima coal mining island is an artificial reclaimed island and the site of Japan’s first major
undersea coal exploitation pioneered by Mitsubishi. Hashima Island is located 3 km southwest of
Takashima. Now Hashima is a ruins called “Gunkanjima”, so called after its resemblance to the
silhouette of a battleship.

Unzen is a beautiful highland Onsen Resort in Shimabara peninsula situated Unzen National Park
The first area to be designated as a National Park in Japan and then the area has been developed

Where to explore
The estuary town facing the Ariake Sea; Canal boat cruise can be enjoyed while
experience the atmospheres of castle town. Surprisingly, 60km lengh canal in total was
constructed in the town of Yanagawa and the Yanagawa prospered as a castle town because
the canals were used for the moats, which was the protection of enemy during Edo period.

go down the river skillfully maneuvered by a boatman with bamboo pole.
Listed on National Scenic Landmark, was built in 1697 as the villa of the Fourth Lord Tachibana
Akitora. At that time the region was called Hanabatake (Field of flower), so the villa was named

Japan’s modern steel industry was started as Yawata steel Works at Higashida district in 1901.
Since then, the Works greatly contributed to Japan’s industrial modernization until rapid postwar
economic growth. The three sites in Higashida have been registered on UNESCO World Heritage
as Sites of Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution.
Only the Blast Furnace in the world which preserved as it was. The birth place where Japan’s
steel industry began in 1901. It contributed greatly to the development of the Japanese steel
industry and was used until 1972, and has been preserved just as it was.
First Head Office of the Steel Works / UNESCO World Heritage
Built in 1899, ahead of production facilities. It is an architectural fusion of Japanese and
European design, a two story red brick building with bilateral symmetry and a central dome
set in a Japanese tile roof.
Museum of Industrial Technology. In April 2007, based on this theme of “innovation, ” the Kitakyushu
Innovation Gallery & Studio (KIGS) opened in Yahata, Higashida, the first site of steel manufacturing
in Japan’s modern age. Various things related Industry technologies are exhibited.

Kagoshima-prefecture travel guide
Kagoshima-prefecture is located at the southwest tip of Kyushu on the Satsuma Peninsula
and Osumi Peninsula. This prefecture also includes a chain of islands stretching further to
the southwest of Kyushu for a few hundred kilometers. The prefecture boasts a chain of
active and dormant volcanoes, including the great Sakura-jima Island, which towers out of
the Kagoshima bay opposite Kagoshima-city.

Where to explore
The city is southernmost capital in Kyushu ; Sakura-jima which raises the smoke across the
Kagoshima Bay. Kagoshima prospered in the Edo period as a castle town, and is a hometown
of Takamori Saigo who contributed to the Meiji Restoration.

Ibusuki and surrounded araa Satsuma peninsula extends about 50 kilometers south from
Kagoshima-city, making up the southwestern section of Kagoshima Prefecture. The peninsula
offers a mixture of hot springs, subtropical natural attractions and cultural sites. Ibusuki is an
onsen resort that is famous for its sand baths, where bathers are buried in naturally heated sand.

Kirishiama Onsen
Located on the lower slopes of the Kirishima Mountain with a distant view over
Kagoshima Bay and Sakurajima below. The area is made up of over a dozen
Onsen, of which the largest and best know is Maruo Onsen. With its high
concentration of hotels and central location, Maruo Onsen is the representative
resort town of the entire Kirishima Onsen area.
