Oita-prefecture is on the north-eastern section of KyushuIt is bordered by Miyazaki-prefecture

to the south, and Fukuoka-prefecture and Kumamotoprefecture to the west. The prefecture is

a representative Onsen Resort area in Japan, total boasting hot spring sources and hot spring

flowing volume are both Japan’s largest. Most recommended Onsen Resorts are Beppu and

Where to Explore

 

Beppu

Onsen Resort where the largest hot spring yield in Japan. The popular hot spring town nestle at the

foot of volcanosMount Yufu and Mount Tsurumi. Boasting more than 2,800 hot spring sources and 

flowing rate of nearly 137,000 kiloliters per day, Beppu is considered a paradise of hot springs famous

for high therapeutic effects.


 

Yufuin

A beautiful and tranquil Onsen Resort, Yufuin is located about 15 km west of Beppu and is spreading

in the Yufu basin at the mountain foot of Yufu. Onsen Resort life can be enjoyed at the beautiful and

tranquil place harmonized with nature in the basin of mountain hill area.


 

Okubungo

Nature-blessed region at Ono River basin, the northern part is surrounded by Aso & Kuju Mountains.

Okubungo consists of Takada, Kuju, Kusu,Kokonoe, Bungo-ono and Ogata.

 


 

Usa and Ajimu

Located at the base of  Kunisaki peninsula and spreading around Usa Shrine. Since ancient

time the Kunisaki peninsula has been home of Kyushu’s prominent Usa Shrine, influencing

the surrounding hills and valleys with Buddhist culture. Although this is a Shinto shrine, it has

long been holy ground to both Shinto and Buddhist activities, and the Kunisaki Mountains 

and valleys were often chosen by monks as practice ground for meditation.

A small city on the north coast of Oita-prefecture, just east of its border with Fukuoka-prefecture.

During the Edo Period of Japanese history, Nakatsu was a mid-sized domain, and the town itself

has recently expanded to include outlying towns and districts and now comprises almost 500 square

kilometers with a population of almost 85,000.

influenced by  mountain and nature worship, Buddhism, and Usa shrine rising in the

region.  Here remains in Bungo-takada city the historical background for “home of

prayer”  consecrating a mass the Shinto deity, Buddha, and ancestral spirit. And one

of major industry is agriculture and entire area of Kunisaki peninsula including Usa

Showa no machi

The era that lasted till about 30 years ago in Japanese history, Bungo Takada was the most

prosperous in Kunisaki Peninsula for over 300 years from the Edo period up to 1900. Here

remains various old structures and remnants of regional Japanese.


 

Fuki-ji Temple

The temple is a Tendai Buddhist temple located on the slopes of Mount Futago. The temple was

established in 718 and the temple building is the oldest extant wooden structure in Kyushu.

Tashibu-no-sho

This district was once considered the most important estate of Usa Shrine. It has been ascertained

from ancient documents that the rural landscape seen today has remained unchanged since Heian

Kumano magaibutu

Hewn in a rock Mt. Tahara are two of largest Buddhist stone carvings in all Japan.   A Fudo-myu-o

8 meter in heigt and Dainich-nyurai 6.8 meter height. Said to have been carved in the Heian period,

they have received government designation as Important Cultural Properties.

Futago-ji Temple

The Central temple of Rokugo-Manzan in Kunisaki peninsula. The temple was established in 718

Nagasaki-bana Cape in Kunisaki peninsula

Futago-ji Temple

The Central temple of Rokugo-Manzan in Kunisaki peninsula. The temple was established

in 718 by Ninmon and located close to the peak of Mount Futago. Futagoji’s grounds cover

a wide area on the forested slopes of the mountain, with stone and gravel paths and stairs

connecting several halls housing various deities.

A pair of stone Nio Guardians stand at the start of the traditional temple approach below the

parking lot, from where a ten minute ascent up a flight of steps takes you to the main temple buildings.

Among them are the Gomado Hall which is dedicated to Fudomyo, a protector of Buddhism, and the

Okunoin.

Fuki-ji Temple

The oldest extant wooden structure in Kyushu, the temple ;ocated on the slopes of Mount

Futago and was established in 718. Fukiji is dedicated to Amida Buddha, and its main hall

houses an intricate wooden statue of the deity. In fact, the main hall of Fukiji is ranked as

one of the top three Amida Buddha halls in all of Japan.

Kumano Magaibutsu

Hewn in a rock Mt. Tahara are two of largest Buddhist stone carvings in all Japan.   A Fudo-myu-o

8 meter in heigt and Dainich-nyurai 6.8 meter height. Said to have been carved in the Heian period,

they have received government designation as Important Cultural Properties.

Maki Odo

The temple houses nine Buddhists images said to be masterpieces of the Heian period,

including the Maki-Odo Seated Amida Nyorai (Amitabha). Figure and statues of the Four

Devas.  All are designated as important national cultural properties.

 


 

Tashibu-no-sho

This district was once considered the most important estate of Usa Shrine. It has been

ascertained from ancient documents that the rural landscape seen today has remained 

unchanged since Heian period. Now included this are, Kunisaki peninsula is listed on

the World Agricultural Heritage.
