Route 1

 

Saga-city

Saga-city in Kyushu is the seat of the Saga-prefectural government.

It faces the Ariake Sea on the south and is home to Saga Airport. In the center of the city is

the Saga Castle History Museum, which also serves as the city’s symbol. The castle itself is

no longer standing, but the main keep has been reconstructed, resulting in one of the largest

wooden structures in Japan. Saga is also known as the plece where it has made a great

contribution to the Japanese Industrial Revolution.

Saga beef

Saga beef is esteemed as one of the best Wagyu beef brands in Japan.
The cattle used for our meats are fattened in adherence to the regulations of the

Japan Agriculture Co-operative, and we use only Japanese black cattle registered

with their cattle traceability system.

 

Takezaki crab

Takezaki crab is the local specialty of Tara, and is well-known for its rich flavor.

Takezaki crabs are available almost year around. From summer into fall the male

crabs are delicious, with the females and their eggs most delicious during the

autumn and winter. You could even try one of each.

 

 

 

Kashima and Tara

Kashima is located about 60 kilometers southwest of Saga-city.

It borders the Ariake Sea to the east and Nagasaki Prefecture to the southwest.

Feature sightseeing spot is Yutoku Inari Shrine and also Sake brewery visiting

is recommended.

 

 

 

Stay at Ureshino Onsen Resort

Ureshino Onsen is a hot spring town in southwestern Saga Prefecture. Its clear onsen 

waters are high in sodium bicarbonate and sodium chloride and feel extremely smooth

on skin, giving rise to its popularity as a “Bihada no Yu” ( beautiful skin waters).

 


 

Route 2

 

Yobuko

Fishing industry town famous for Squid and Morning Market called Asaichi,

Asaichi opens from 7:30 to 12:00, every day at just next to Yobuko Port. The street of

200 m borrowed from the eaves of the shopping street is named “Asaichi Street”.

 


 

Lunch at Yobuko, Freash Squid

Famous for fresh Squid, transparent in body and firm in texture. The squid has a sweetness that melt

upon the tangue. In the finely crafted style of sashimi known as Ikezukuri, the flesh of still-living

seafood is served.

 


 

Imari

Imari is the porcelain town, has 400years history

Imari is most notable because of Imari porcelain, which is the European collectors’

name for Japanese porcelain wares made in the town of Arita, Saga Prefecture.

Arita

It is known for producing Arita porcelain, one of the traditional handicrafts of Japan.

Famous for Arita yaki which is 400-years old porcelain. The piece is bright, elegant

pictures drawn in transparent white porcelain

 

 

 

Takeo

The Onsen resort, has 1200 years history. Takeo is located in the western part of Saga-prefecture.

The hot spring temperature is 18 to 52 degrees. Spring quality is smooth with alkaline simple hot

spring.  Romon Gate is the landmark of Takeo Onsen Resort, which was designed by a renowned

architect in the Meiji Era, Kingo Tatsuno, and is at the entrance of the Onsen area.

Peace Park

Established in 1955 near the Ground Zero where the Atomic Bomb was dropped at 11:02 am on

Aug. 09, 1945. Peace Memorial Ceremony is held in front of the statue on August 9 every

year and the Mayor of Nagasaki makes the “Nagasaki peace declaration” for the whole world.

It is a 333 meter high mountain in close distance to JR Nagasaki Station. The summit can be reached

Martyrdom of the 26 Saints of Japan     

Nishizaka Hill in Nagasaki is the place of Martyrdom of 26 Japanese Saints.

The Twenty-Six Martyrs of Japan were a group of Catholics who were executed by
crucifixion on February 5, 1597.Their martyrdom is especially significant in the history
of the Catholic Church in Japan. In 1950, Pope Pius XII designated this place as an
official pilgrimage site for CatholicsPope John Paul II visited here in 1981, and Saint
Teresa of Calcutta commonly known as Mother Teresa visited in 1982

Confucius Shrine

The world’s only Confucian shrine built outside China by Chinese hands

First built in 1893 by Chinese residents of Nagasaki with the support of the Ch’ing Dynasty

government, the shrine was designed to serve as a place of worship and learning for the 

Chinese community, and housed a Confucian sanctuary and primary school.

Hashima Coal Mine  /  Gunkan-jima island cruise

Hashima coal mining island is an artificial reclaimed island and the site of Japan’s first major

undersea coal exploitation (1890) pioneered by Mitsubishi – and host to one of the world’s

most extraordinary former mining communities. Hashima Island is located 3 km southwest of

Takashima, and it was the success of Takashima that led Mitsubishi to purchase this island – both

islands giving access to the same undersea coal deposit. Now Hashima is a ruin called “Gunkanjima”,

so called after its resemblance to the silhouette of a battleship.

Shimabara

Located in the Shimabara peninsuka, region spread in the foot of gentle mountain and facing to

calm sea. Shimabara is consist of two cities, Shimabara-city and Minami-Shmabara-city.

Offers various enjoyable things such as Nature, Onsen, Castle town of Shimabara-city,

Hidden Christian history as well as Local Gourmets.

Located in Shimabara-city and was built in 1625 by the feudal load Matsukura Shigemasa, who was

regarded as a master of castle building. The castle, which took 7 years to complete, is also known as

Samurai was a term for the military nobility in pre-industrial Japan.

The Samurai Houses in Shimabara along the old Samurai street near by Shimabara Castle

Guzoni are said to date back to the Shimabara Rebellion of 1637 when the leader of the

uprising, Amakusa Shiro Tokisada, held a siege in Hara Castle with about 37,000 followers.
He made the local farmers provide the rebels with rice cake. The rebels gathered other

ingredients from the ocean and the mountains to put in the soup they cooked the rice cake

in, and thus were able to fight for three months sustained by nutritious food.

Unzen

Unzen is a beautiful highland Onsen Resort in Shimabara peninsula situated Unzen National Park 

The first area to be designated as a National Park in Japan and then the area has been developed

as Onsen Resort for both tourist Japanese and foreigner.

One of the best scenic spot in Unzen. At any time of the year the natural scenery of Nita Pass

Unzen Jigoku

Jigoku, means Hell, is the number one attraction of Unzen with a peculiar smell of sulfur emitted

from the springs, and with white smoke rising from the ground over a wide area.

This is a striking reminder that Unzen Volcano is still very much alive.

Harajo Castle ruins

Site of Historic Battle field of Shimabara Rebellion, registered on UNESCO’s World Heritage Site

as Hidden Christian Sites in the Nagasaki Region, to tell the Christian faith continued even during

the ban on Christianity. Located in Minami-Shimabara-city, the Battle field of Shimabara Rebellion

which was a peasant uprising agaist bakufu’s persecution of Christians under the leadership of 

Amakusa Shiro in 1637.

Yanagawa

The estuary town facing the Ariake Sea; Canal boat cruise can be enjoyed while

experience the atmospheres of castle town. Surprisingly, 60km lengh canal in total was

constructed in the town of Yanagawa and the Yanagawa prospered as a castle town because

the canals were used for the moats, which was the protection of enemy during Edo period.

Kawara soba is a local cuisine which Soba noodles and meat are cooked together

on a Kawara (stone roof tile) and dipped into a special sauce when eating it.

topped with cheese and/or egg heated in oven. The melted cheese and soft-boiled egg

Konamon Pedstrian tunnel

Only the place in the world !   You can cross the strait on foot.  The Kanmon Strait, separating Honshu

and Kyushu, is a very beautiful and busy waterway with as many as 700 small and  large ships a

day passing through it. the Kanmon Pedestrian Tunnel, which enables people to cross on foot, the

Higashida

Japan’s modern steel industry was started as Yawata steel Works at Higashida district in 1901. 

Since then, the Works greatly contributed to Japan’s industrial modernization until rapid  postwar

Hakata Ramen Yatai

Food stalls “Yatai”is one thing to enjoy in Fukuoka. Despite a decline in recent year,

there are said to be more than 160. The food stalls have all kind of food, but you have

to try Hakata ramen, usually made with white soup from pork bone and thin noodles.

 

 

Ramen Stadium

Ramen Stadium isn’t really a stadium as the name suggests, but a food court on the fifth floor

of Canal City’s Cinema Building. It carries not one, but eight famous ramen stalls that serves

different ramen styles from across Japan. Ramen Stadium has eight ramen stalls with ramen

from Hakata, Kurume, and as far as Tokyo, Kyoto, and Sapporo.

Mizutaki

It is a local cuisine in Fukuoka.  izutaki (boil in water) describes, this is a hot pot dish made

with chopped chickens, negi, and a variety of vegetables put in a pot of water and boiled,

then dipped in ponzu sauce.

The Beautiful Canal town Yanagawa located about 60km south of Fukuoka-city and is

a former Castle town facing the Ariake Bay and spreading in the Chikugo plain.

Dazaifu  

Dazaifu is a historical place, about 1300 years ago, in Dazaifu, there was a government

office to manage the entire Kyushu  for a long period of 500 years at the present Dazaifu. 

Dazaifu Temmangu Shrine

The Shrine dedicated to the deity of learning. Many Japanese visit the Shrine to pass the

examination successfuly. Built on the site of grave of Sugawara Michizane, who is deified

as the Deity of scholarship. The shrine is the headquarter shrine of 12,000 Tenmangu

Kyushu National Museum

Kyushu National Museum was opened in 2005 in Dazaifu-city next to Dazaifu Tenmangu

Shrine, as Japan’s fourth national museum after Tokyo, Kyoto and Nara.

Government site of Ancient Kyushu, Known as TOFURO, the site was used during the

Nara (710 to 794 AD) and Heian (794 to 1185 AD) period. The Dazaifu was responsible

for supervising Japan’s maritime frontier, as well as for administering the nine provinces

Yanagawa Canal boat cruise

 

Yanagawa Canal boat cruise is to board a small boat called the Donkobune and slowly go

down the river skillfully maneuvered by a boatman with bamboo pole. 

 

You will enjoy a leisurely cruise along the streets and houses which still retain some 

remnants of castle town, hearing the boatman’s explanation of the history and landscape

of Yanagawa.  You can also enjoy the specialty of Yanagawa eel steamed in basket

called “Unagi-no-seiromushi” on the boat.

Ohana and Shotoen Garden

 

Listed on National Scenic Landmark.  Built in 1697 as the villa of the Fourth Lord

Tachibana Akitora.  At that time the region was called Hanabatake (Field of flower), 

so the villa was named Ohana or Flower.

 

The garden itself spread out over 3300 square meters and is laid out in such a way as

to evoke the image of Matsushima in Sendai.  It was extensively renovated in 1908 to 1910.

There are around 280 pines within the garden 1500 stones and 14 stone lanterns. From

October to March the pond is host to a flock of wild ducks.

The Beautiful Canal town Yanagawa

Yanagawa is located about 60km south of Fukuokacity and is a former Castle town facing the

Ariake Sea and spreading in the Chikugo plain. Current main industries are tourism, fishery and

Yanagawa is the birthplace of renown poet Hakushu Kitahara, whose accomplishments are marked by a

memorial park and the many stone monuments bearing his works placed throughout the city.

Steamed Eel

Yanagawa is the birthplace of Steamed Eel that has more than 300 years history. There are many

restaurants which have their long history and each restaurants have been keeping the traditional

source and brand value.

 

Local delicacies 

Yanagawa is facing to Ariake Sea where many fresh and unique fishes are caught.

Japanese cuisine using local delicacies is also reccomended

 


 

Sake breweries

There are two authentic Sake breweries where you can enjoy tasting in Yanagawa.

Yanagawa Shuzo Sake brewery founded in 1890 and Kikubijin Shuzo Sake brewery founded in 1735.

Yanagawa Sagemon Festival

The festival is held from February 11 through April 3 in Yanagawa. Hina dolls are displayed by families

with girls to pray for safe growth of their children, in Yanagawa.
