Kunisaki peninsula & Bungo-takada (国東半島&豊後高田)

Kunisaki peninsula & Bungo-takada

Kunisaki peninsula began to develop 1,300 years ago as a 
sacred religious ground influenced by mountain and nature 
worship, Buddhism, and Usa shrine rising in the region.
Here remains in Bungo-takada city the historical background 
for “home of prayer” consecrating en mass the Shinto deity, 
Buddha, and ancestral spirit.
And one of major industry is agriculyure and entire area of 
Kunisaki peninsula including Usa are listed on the World 
Agricultural Heritage.



Showa no machi
Showa is the era that lasted till about 30 years ago in
Japanese history, Bungo Takada was the most prosperous 
in Kunisaki Peninsula for over 300 years from the Edo period 
up to 1900. Here remains various old structures and remnants 
of regional Japanese cities in the 60’s-when the shopping 
district culture was as its height. more ...

Kumano Magaibutsu
Hewn in a rock Mt. Tahara are two of largest Buddhist stone
carvings in all Japan.
A Fudo-myu-o 8 meter in heigt and Dainich-nyurai 6.8 meter
height. Said to have been carved in the Heian period, they
have received goverment designation as Important Culural
Properties.


Futago-ji Temple
The temple is a Tendai Buddhist temple located on the slopes 
of Mount Futago, the highest mountain on the Kunisaki 
Peninsula. The temple was established in 718 by Ninmon and 
became the central temple of Rokugō-Manzan that the generic 
name of temples in the whole of the Kunisaki peninsula.


Fuki-ji Temple 
The oldest extant wooden structure in Kyushu, dating back
to the letter half of Heian period (794 to 1185AD). It has been
designated a National Treasure. It is one of the tree top 
Amitabha halls in Japan. Visitor will also be impressed by the
vibrant colors of the four seasons, including the new green 
of spring and the rich leaves of autumn. 

Choan-ji Temple
The temple known as the "Temple of Flower", with visitor 
enjoyng rhododendrons in spring and the colored leaves
of autumn.  The repository houses images of Taroten and 
Nidoji and the Lotus Sutra inscribed on a copper sheet;
all are important national cultural properties.

Maki-Odo
The temple houses nine Buddhists images said to be 
masterpieces of the Heian period, including the Maki-Odo 
Seated Amida Nyorai (Amitabha). Figure and statues of 
the Four Devas. All are designated as important national
cultural properties.

Tennen-ji Temple
Said to have been founded in 718AD, this temple constructed
to uphold the traditional of Shujo-onie, an ancient Rokugo 
Manzan rite conducted at New Year. Images of the god Fudo
are carved into a huge stone lying the river that runs in front
of the temple.

Onie-no-sato Traditional Cultural Learing Center
The facility displays a stutue of Amida Nyorai (Amitabha) 
from Tennen-ji Temple and a theater that allows visitors 
to experience the full power of the Shujo-onie rite.


Tashibu-no-sho
This district was once considered the most important estate
of Usa Shrine. It has been ascertained from ancient 
documents that the rural landscape seen today has remained 
unchanged since Heian period. Now included this are, 
Kunisaki peninsula is listed on the World Agricultural Heritage.

Nagasakibana
The resort park features a beach, a campsite, restaurant and 
more. The entire premises gets painted beautifully with colors
of each and every seasonal flower in season. Also offered
here is a trial program for oil-dressing making using the seeds
of the flowers at the park.

Kushida Shrine
The most exciting summer festival in Kyushu, Hakata Gion
Yamagasa
 is held in the shrine in July.
The tall Kazari Yamakasa, a luxuriously decorated float, is

Tochoji Temple
The Temple was founded in 806 by Kobo-daishi Kukai and it is 
the oldest temple of the Shingon sect in Japan that Kobo-
daishi set up. The Fukuoka Daibutsu called Great Buddha of 
Fukuoka completed in 1993 stands 10.8 meters tall and is the 
largest seated wooden of Buddha in Japan.

Hakata Machiya Furusatokan
The folk museum depicts the life and culture of Hakata 
Fukuoka. Exhibition hall, many faces and facets of the 
Hakata way of life can be found, Machiya hall, is a superb 
example of traditional architecture and has been moved 
here and restored to provide a glimpse into the past.

Fukuoka Castle Ruins
Fukuoka castle, was built in 1601.  
 Part of stone wall and canal, 
and the Tamon tower are still left intact
as they were back

Exploring Yanagawa (柳川)

Exploring Yanagawa

A beautiful canal town Yanagawa
the Canal boat cruise can be enjoyed 
while experience the atmospheres of 
Japanese castle town and rural Japanese 
life style.

The estuary town facing the Ariake Sea 
through the Chikugo River and Yabe River.
People started to live here since ancient times 
and the agriculture and fishery have been 
engaged in by making Horiwari literary means 
the artificial canal.
Surprisingly, 60km lengh canal in total was constructed in the town of Yanagawa 
and the Yanagawa prospered as a castle town because the canals were used for 
the moats, which was the protection of enemy during Edo period.
 

Highlight of Yanagawa

Canal boat cruise 
Yanagawa Canal boat cruise is to board a small boat called the Donkobune and slowly go down the river skillfully maneuvered 
by a boatman with bamboo pole.
 
Enjoy a leisurely cruise along the streets and houses which still 
retain some remnants of castle town, hearing the boatman’s 
explanation of the history and landscape of Yanagawa.


Where to visit 

Ohana and Syotoen Garden
Listed on National Scenic Landmark, was built in 1697 as 
the villa of the Fourth Lord Tachibana Akitora.
The garden itself spread out over 3300 square meters and is 
laid out in such a way as to evoke the image of Matsushima 
in Sendai. It was extensively renovated in 1908 to 1910.


Birthplace of Hakushu Kitahara
Yanagawa is the birthplace of great poet Hakushu Kitahara
whose accomplishments are marked by a memorial park 
and the many stone monuments bearing his works placed 
throughout the city.
 

Annual festival

Yanagawa Sagemon Festival
The festival is held from February 11 through April 3 in 
Yanagawa.
Hina dolls are displayed by families with girls 
to pray for safe growth of their children, in Yanagawa, 
Each display of “Sagemon” represents parents’ wishes for 
their girls to grow into beautiful, strong, and proud women.

Exploring Beppu

Beppu is a popular hot spring town nestle at the foot 
of volcanos, Mt. Yufu and Mt. Tsurumi.
Boasting more than 2,800 hot spring sources and
flowing rate of nearly 137,000 kiloliters per day, 
Beppu is considered a paradise of hot springs
famous for high therapeutic effects.
The town is divided 
into eight major hot spring areas collectively called 
“Beppu Hatto”, which offer beautiful scenery and various 
type of water of different qualities.


●Where to visit
Hell tour 
The most famous sights are Jigoku Meguri or (Burning Hell) 
tour.  
A collection of hot springs where the water bubbles 
forth from underground, often with unusual result.

 Kannawa Onsen
With numerous jets of white steam emitting from gushing hot 
springs, this area is a must see destination for Beppu 
sightseers. Charming shops and Ryokan (Japanese inn) are 
tucked along the narrow and winding streets. It is also known 
for steam baths.

 Myoban Onsen
On the hill facing Beppu Bay, is a small, quiet mountain resort. 
Visitors enjoy several types of thermals such as mud bath or 
milky water bath accompanied by a distinctive sulphuric odor. 
Mineral deposits are worked at the thatched Yunohana-goya.

Takasaki mountain animal park
Located on the boundary line of Oita-city and Beppu-city is 
an area populated by wild Japanese monkies.
The park was opened in 1953,and is now home to about 
1700 wild Japanese
monkies.

Beppu Tower
A famous landmark in Beppu-city; there are discount shops 
on the 1st
floor, there is a viewing lounge on the 16th floor 
and there is an
observatory which overlooks Beppu-city 
on the 17th floor

Exploring Nagasaki 

An exotic unique culture offering a diverse array of attractions. 

It became a center of Dutch, Portuguese and 
other European influences in the 16th century 
and flourished as a trading port & center of 
Christian missionary activities.

The detonation for an atomic bomb over Nagasaki 
during the Second World War is a dark page in 
the cities turbulent history. Now, however the 
city has become a center of peace, blessed 
with beautiful natural scenery and eclectic 
mix of historical sites and architecture.
In fact, many churches and Christian sites have 
been proposed for inclusion on the UNESCO 
World Heritage list.

Where to visit
Glover Garden
The garden is one of Nagasaki's popular tourist 
attractionsone and takes its name from Thomas Glover, 
his arms-importing operations played an important part in 
the Meiji Restoration, he built the first train line in Japan and 
he even helped establish the first modern Mitsubishi ship yard.

Nagasaki Peace Park
The Park was established in 1955 near the Ground Zero of 
the Atomic Bomb explosion. Every year, on August 9, the 
anniversary of the atomic bombing, a Peace Memorial  
Ceremony is held in front of the statue and the Mayor of 
Nagasaki delivers a peace declaration to the World.

Oura Cathedral 
The Cathedral, one of the famous landmarks in Nagasaki City, 
was built in 1865 under the supervision of the French priest 
Bernard Petitjean.
It was designated as a National Treasure in 1933 for its value 
as Japan's oldest Gothic-style cathedral.

Dejima
The area was a fan-shaped artificial island in the bay of 
Nagasaki that was a Dutch trading post as Japan’s only 
open gateway to Europe during Japan’s self-imposed 
isolation of Edo period from 1641 until 1853.

Chinatown
One of big three china town in Japan along with Yokohana 
and Kobe.
There are about 50 Chinese restaurants and many Chinese 
sundries shops in there.

Martyrdom of the 26 Saints
Nishizaka Hill in Nagasaki reminds us of the Martyrdom of 
26 Japanese Saints.
In 1862, the 26 Japanese martyrs were canonized by Pope 
Pius IX.  I
n 1956, the place of their martyrdom was designated 
as a Historical Place by Nagasaki Prefecture.

Suwa Shrine
The shrine was founded in the wake of ban of Christianity in 
the early 17th century, and during the Edo Period it soon grew 
into a spiritual and cultural hub for the citizens of Nagasaki.
Kunchi festival is held from October 7 to 9 every year and is 
considered one of the three major festivals of Japan

Confucius Shrine
It is said to be the world's only Confucian shrine built outside 
China by Chinese hands. First built in 1893 by Chinese 
residents of Nagasaki with the support of the Ch’ing Dynasty government, the shrine was designed to serve as a place of 
worship and learning for the Chinese community, and housed 
a Confucian sanctuary and primary school.

Annual events & Festivals
Nagasaki Lantern Festival 
An annual festival in Nagasaki held on Chinese new year.
The festival has been started to celebrate a new year by 
Chinese who lived in Nagasaki, and it became the Nagasaki's 
festival since 1994. More than 10 thousand lanterns are 
decorated at China town during the festival.

Nagasaki Kunchi 
It is one of big-three festival in Japan, held on October 7 to 9 
at
Suwa Shrine. The festival features Chinese dance 
including Ja-odori, this time dancing all around the city but
especially at Suwa Shrine. The whole of Nagasaki Kunchi 
dance was designated on Important Intangible Cultural Asset.

and
River Walk Kitakyushu are within walking distance and can be ached 
by going through the local shopping arcade from Kyomachi to Uomachi.

Higashida, the birth place of Japan’s modern steel industry
Japan’s modern steel industry was started as Yawata steel Works at 
Higashida district in 1901. Since then, the Works was expanded 
and enhanced and greatly contributed to Japan’s industrial modernization 
until rapid postwar economic growth. As the result of Japan’s rapid
Industrial Modernization, Meiji Japan’s Industrial Revolution sites including four sites of Yawata Steel Works have been registered on

Enjoy Nature 

 Hiraodai Karst plateau
It is counted as one of the three largest karst plateau in Japan 
along with the Akiyoshi-dai Plateau and the Shikoku Karst.
The Plateau offers a different views in each of the four seasons, 
resembling a burnt field in the spring, appearing fresh and green 
in the early summer, and similar to a dry plain in the fall.

Kawachi Reservoir 
The first-class civil construction heritage that triggered the 
registration of UNESCO World Cultural Heritage of Meiji 
Japan’s Industrial Revolution.
The Kawachi Reservoir was constructed for the industrial 
water supply to Yawata Steel Works. The dam was 
constructed at the Okura River and upper stream of the 
river was expanded for making the 7milion cubic metre 
reservoir.

Wakamatsu kita kaigan
The northern tip Coast of Kyushu Island and facing to 
Genkai Sea where a part of Genkai Quasi-National Park.

Exploring Shimonoseki (下関)

Shimonoseki
Shininoseki is situated on the westernmost tip of the prefecture
faces  Kitakyushu-city’ Moji with Kanmon Strait in between, 
and connected by the
Kanmon-kyo Bridge and  Kanmonon 
tunnel. The Kanmon Strait is known as the scene of an ancient 
battle leading the fall of the Heike Clan.

Dan-no-ura canal, where the Emperor Antoku (eight-years-old 
grandson of Heike Clan Taira-no Kiyomori), who fled to 
Dan-no-ura, took his own life by drowning himself.

Akama Shrine
The shrine located in Shimonoseki, enshrines the Heike clan and the
young Emperor Antoku, who died in the battle against the powerful
samurai clan, Genji. 

The Dragon’s Palace-styled , located to the 
north of Dan-no-ura, is consecrated to the tragic young emperor and 
has the Emperor Antoku’s tomb in its precincts.

Karato-ichiba Fish market 
Shimonoseki is the Japan’s principal fishing ground for the Blowfish, 
is called Fugu in Japanese.
You can find eat Fugu Sushi or Sashimi at the Fish market
near JR Shimonoseki Station.



Sunpanro 
The Treaty of Shimonoseki, known as the Treaty of Maguan 
in China, was signed on April 17, 1895, between the Empire of 
Japan and Qing Empire of China, ending the First 
Sino-Japanese War.


Hinoyama
A mountain located in Shimonoseki-city with an altitude of 268m.
From the observatory at the summit of the mountain, beautiful views, 
such as Kanmon-kyo Bridge, Shimonoseki city, Genkainada, 

Mojiko Retro
district and Suo-Nada, can be seen.

Kaikyo-yume tower 
Kaikyo-yume tower means Kanmon Strait dream tower is a landmark of 
Shimonoseki-city, and has the international conference hall and the
exhibition trade fair site.

Genkai Golf Club 
High degree of difficulty course, inspire your challenge mind.
Majestic Seaside Course facing to Genkai bat, each courses are separated by pine trees.
18 holes, 7011 yards, Par 72, 2 bent green.

Chisun Country Club Onga 
The course is located at hill-side of Onga rejoin and beautiful 
and spectacle scenery can be overlooked from the course.
Golf course was constructed in 1973
・27 holes and two bent greens
Access about 1 hour from Fukuoka-city by car 

Wakamatshu Golf Club  
Located seaside of Genkai Sea and there is a lot of pine trees 
in the course  waiting for your challenge, and the greens have 
subtle undulation
The course is constructed in 1959
・18 holes, par 72, 6744yards, bent green
・Access : 1 and half hours from Fukuoka-city by car

Yasu Kogen Country Club
Located on the Yasu kogen platea
Golf course was constructed in 1974, 
there are three causes East, South and West, 
9holes each course 
Access: 1 hour from Fukuoka-city by car


Chikushigaoka Golf Club
The nearest golf course from Fukuoka-city
Round while watching the spectacular view
27 holes, all vent one green.
Access :  40 minutes from Fukuoka-city by car 

Ito Golf Club 
Located at the mountain food of Mt. Raizan, 
15metre height difference and moderate undulation are 
designed in the course.
18 holes, one bent green
Access : about 1 hour from Fukuoka-city by car 


Aso Iizuka Golf Club 
Located in Izuka-city where it was a town coal mine
Golf course was constructed in 1973 and a lot of professional 
golf tournaments were held there.

●Beppu and Oita
Beppu Ogiyama Golf Club
A hill side course with a beautiful view overlooking the whole 
view of Beppu Bay.
・18 holes
・Access: 30 minutes from Beppu by car

Kijima Kogen Golf Club
Highland course with gently Undulation, fairways are 
completely separated.

・18 holes
・Access: 30 minutes from Beppu by car

Oita Country Club Tsukigata Course
Hill side course with gentle ups and downs. The fairway is 
wide and has a long distance. 
・18 holes
・Access: 1 hour from Beppu by car



●Nagasaki, Unzen and Shimabara
Omurawan Country Club Old Course
Hill course. Out course is a wide fairway, but the difficulty 
level is high.
A different strategy is required for each hole. 
In course is separated in natural forest, there are no similar 
holes.

・Access: 1 hour from Nagasaki-city by car

Shimabara Country Club
It is a hillside course on the slopes of the mountain 
which can see beautiful Ariake Bay. 
The fairway is wide and magnificent course.

Unzen Golf Link
The oldest public course in Japan, located in the Unzen 
National Park
・18 holes
・Access: 30 minutes from Shimabara, 5 minutes from Unzen
   by car

Kumamoto and Aso region
Kumamoto Kuko Country Club
Located at the mountain foot of magnificent Aso, 
this course adjacent to Kumamoto Airport.

・Access: 1 hour from Kumamoto-city
・18 hols, par 72

Kumamoto Aso Country Club
Located at the south side of Aso outer rim. 18 hole.
The course designed by using the natural topography as it is.
・Access: 1 hour from Kumamoto-city and half hours from Aso
 


●Miyazaki rejoin
Phoenix Country Club
located in Phoenix Seagaia Resort 
Seaside course, faces the Hyuga Sea and is separated 
by natural pine forests.

 
Tom Watson Golf Course  
located in Phoenix Seagaia Resort 
Sea-side course that Tom Watson supervised the design 
and was the only one with his name. The fairway is widely flat 
and e
ach hole in the pine forest is completely separated.

Exploring Chikugo region (筑後)

Chikugo region 
   consists of Asakura, Akizuki, Ukiha, Yame and HIta
The Kyushu’s largest Chikugo River which flows from Mount Aso 
through the Chikugo region to Ariake Sea.
The Kyushu’s largest 
Chikugo plain spreading in the Chikugo River basin, where people 
live from ancient time and the various cultures have been created.
There are a lot of features here such as rural land scape, 
fruit fields, ancient ruins, shrines, temples, castle town, 
Sake brewery, Onsen (hot spring), scrumptious local cosines, 
Japanese cultural experiences …
You can find and meet many real Japan.

Asakura
Asakura is located in the central part of Fukuoka prefecture 
and has a blessed nature spreading in the Chikugo plain.





Akizuki
Akizuki was a Castle town flourished during the Edo period 
(1603-1868) and is called the small Kyoto in Chikuzen.
Akizuki is located in a tranquil mountain basin and, the 
castle ruins and samurai residences are carefully preserved 
and the townscape is also selected as an important traditional 
building group conservation area.
Also known as a sight of 
cherry blossoms and autumn leaves.

Harazuru Onsen 
The tranquil Onsen Resort near Fukuoka-city and is located 
on the banks of Chikugo River.

The quality hot spring is weakly alkaline and sulfur is mixed
and 
has the effect of dropping old horn and creating beautiful 
skin.


Ukiha
Ukiha blessed with nature where many orchards spread out at 
the foot of Mino mountain range.
Yoshii, in the center of Chikugo flourished as a post-town 
during the Edo period, and there a lot of Sake brewery which 
have established the Edo period.
A fruits picking and Sake brewery visit can be enjoyed here.

Tachiarai Peace Memorial Museum
This Museun was built on the formaer site of Tachiarai Army
Airfield.
The airfield is also the place where many young Zero-sen 
pilots have sent off sortie. This Museum continues to send 
a message to peace as "Information Base for Peace".


Yame
Yame is called the land of tee, located about 50 km 
south-southeast of Fukuoka-city.
Yame consists of Kurogi, Hoshino villege, Tachibana,
Yabe, Jyoyo and Tachibana.



Hita
Hita prospered as Tenryo (direct controlled territory of 
Edo Shogunate) during the Edo period (1603-1868). 
It is called "Little Kyoto", and has old buildings standing 
in a row, even today, near the hot spring resort. In Mameta 
town, you can enjoy a stroll through the historic streets.

Showa no machi in Bungo Takada (昭和の町)

Showa no machi in Bungo Takada

Showa is the era that lasted till about 30 years ago in 
Japanese history, Bungo Takada was the most prosperous 
in Kunisaki Peninsula for over 300 years from the Edo period 
up to 1900.
Here remains various old structures and remnants of regional 
Japanese cities in the 60’s-when the shopping district culture 
was as its height.



This shopping district itself is like time travel theme park. 
It comes with a facility replicating some of the old residential 
buildings and school classrooms, as well as a museum 
displaying nostalgic toys from old days.

Karato Fish Market

Karato Fish Market, is a fish market in Shimonoseki establish 
in 1933, and the blowfish trading volume is Japan's highest.

This market is not only the wholesale market of fresh fishes 
taken in the sea around
Shimonoseki but also the retail market 
of fishes, marine products and sushi.





You can eat various Sushi with a economical price.

Kokura

Kokura
Kokura had flouriched as a castle town until end of the 19th century.
Now, it is the heart of Kitakyushu-city, and many of the main tourist 
spots, hotels, shopping districts and restaurants are located around 
JR Kokura station.
The “must-see” sights of Kokura Castle, Kokura Castle Garden 
and
River Walk Kitakyushu are within walking distance and can be
reached by going through the
local shopping arcade from Kyomachi
to Uomachi.



Where to visit
Kokura Castle
One of the Must visit destination 
in Kitakyushulocated within a 
walking distance of JR Kokura Stations.
Hosokawa Tadaoki 
commenced the construction of Kokura Castle in 1602 and spent 
7 years to completed it.
The castle had a fivefold and six layered 
donjon and it was built in the architectural style called “Kara-zukuri”.

Kokura Castle Garden
To the east side of castle, there is Kokura Castle Garden, 
which has reproduced the mansion of a feudal lord from the 
Edo period.
The area around the castle is maintained a 
Katsuyama Park, which is famous for cherry blossom.

Shinozaki Hachiman Shrine
One of the most beautiful Shinto Shrine in Kitakyushu.
The sacred places believed to give visitors some special 
energy and a spiritual force that heals and refreshes.
The shrine was founded in 584 after gods of Haciman 
Shrine Ojin Emperor and Jimgu Empress.

River Walk Kitasyushu
River Walk Kitakyushu is a large commercial facility near 
the Murasaki River and Kokura Castle.
It was opened as part of the Kitakyushu Renaissance 
Scheme in 2003, and possesses many colorful and originally

Tanga market 
Tanga Market is a typical Japanese market, known as 
“the kitchen” in Kitakyushu-city. There are more than 
120 shops in the 180 metre-long arcade. Here you get 
a true taste of the culture and sample the real life style

Festival
Kokura Gion Daiko Festival
The summer festivals held in july around Kokura Castle,
in 
which the main attraction is the playing the drums.
The highlights of the Festival which you should not miss are 
the Taiko Performing Contest held at Kokura Castle on July 15th,
and the Taiko Performing Parade held  at Komonji-dori street

Itsukushima Shrine (厳島神社)

Itsukushima Shrinein the sacred island Miyajima 

Itsukushima Shrine in Hiroshima Prefecture is 
a Shinto shrine dedicated to the three daughter 
of the deity of seas and storms on the sacred 
Miyajima Island in Seto Inland Sea, where 
gods are believe.

The vermillion-painted buildings connected by 
corridors and its symbolic great torii gate 
appear as if floating on the sea at high tides. 


UNESCO World Heritage 
Standing in perfect harmony with its natural surroundings, 
this elegant palace-style architecture was registered on 
the list of UNESCO World Heritage in 1996. 



Five-storied Pagoda 
The 27m high Pagoda is said to have been 
constructed in 1407, and beautifully blended
Japanese architecture with that of Tang Dynasty
China.  The Pagoda has five levels and a hollow
construction in the interior.



Daishoin  
The buddhist temple oversaw the Itsukishima. Shrine 
festival until Shinto and Buddhism were spareted during
the Meiji Era. The entrance to the temple is guarded on 
both sides by Buddhist statues and there are many 
others in the main hall such as the wave-cutting God 
of fire and Eleven-headed Buddha. The elevated location
of the temple offers beautiful views of Miyajima and the 
cityscape on the opposit shore.
