Day 4 Yanagawa & Kitakyushu

                                                                                            6 days North-West Kyushu tour

 

Yanagawa is the estuary town facing the Ariake Sea; Canal boat cruise can be enjoyed while

experience the atmospheres of castle town. Surprisingly, 60km length canal in total was

constructed in the town of Yanagawa and the Yanagawa prospered as a castle town because

the canals were used for the moats, which was the protection of enemy during Edo period.

Yanagawa

 

Canal boat cruise 

Yanagawa Canal boat cruise is to board a small boat called the Donkobune and slowly 

go down the river skillfully maneuvered by a boatman with bamboo pole.

 


 

Ohana and Shotoen Garden

Listed on National Scenic Landmark, was built in 1697 as the villa of the Fourth Lord Tachibana

Akitora. At that time the region was called Hanabatake (Field of flower), so the villa was named

Ohana or Flower.

Unagi, eel cuisine 

Yanagawa is the birthplace of Steamed Eel that has more than 300 years history. There are many

restaurants which have their long history and each restaurants have been keeping the traditional

source and brand value.

 


 

Seafood of Ariake sea, local delicacies 

Yanagawa is facing to Ariake Sea where many fresh and unique fishes are caught. Japanese

cuisine using local delicacies is also recommended

 


 

Kitakyushu

 

Kitakyushu is the dynamic city where one million people are living and working, is creating the

beautiful Night view which you have never seen before. The night view from the mount Sarakura

is chosen the three major Night View in Japan. The area of Night view is the largest in the World ;

about 40km east to west and 10km south to north and also the number of lighting to create the

night view is the largest in the World.

The place is located on the ground floor of JR Kokura Station. There are 8 restaurants where

local cuisines can be enjoyed.

At night time, food stalls called Yatai open in the square in front of Tanga Market.

Where to explore

 

Peace Park

Established in 1955 near the Ground Zero where the Atomic Bomb was dropped at 11:02 am on

Aug. 09, 1945. Peace Memorial Ceremony is held in front of the statue on August 9 every

year and the Mayor of Nagasaki makes the “Nagasaki peace declaration” for the whole world.

 

Atomic Bomb Museum

The museum exhibits a number of photograph that depict the devastation caused by atomic

bomb showing the lead-up to this tragic day, the history of the development of nuclear arms

and our desire for peace.

 


 

Ground Zero

The plutonium atomic bomb exploded about 500m over the central monument at 11:02 a.m.

on August 9, 1945.   The most part of Nagasaki was destroyed, and a tremendous number of

lives were lost. And about 70,000 of Nagasaki’s 240,000 residents died instantly, and up to

60,000 were injured. 

 


 

Peace Statue

Completed in 1955, ten years after the atomic bombing. The 9.7 meter high statue sitting on

a 4 meter tall pedestal, made by renown sculptor Kitamura Seibo. The raised arm points to the

threat of nuclear weapons and the out-stretched arm symbolizes peace.

Nagasaki Wharf

Elegant international & domestic tourist harbour. Made up of around 20 unique shops and

restaurants lined up at the water front, offering various choices such Japanese, Western,

China Town

Nagasaki China town at shinchi is one of the big three china town in JapanThere are about 50

Chinese restaurants and many Chinese sundries shops in there.

 


 

Oura Cathedral

The Cathedral is one of the significant Christian Pilgrimage site in Japan. Established 1865, this

church is officially known as “Oura Cathedral, the Church of 26 Martyrs.” It was built by the French

priest Bernard Petitjean of Fier who had been dispatched by the Foreign Missionary Church of

Paris to dedicate prayers to the 26 saints martyred on Nishizaka hill.

 


 

Glover Garden 

Located on Minami-Yamate hill in Nagasaki-city, Glover Garden has nine Western style buildings

including the Glover’s Residence built in 1863 and is Japan’s oldest wooden Western–style building

registered on the UNESCO World Heritage. The elegant scenery of Nagasaki harbor view from

Glover Garden can be enjoyed.

Dejima 

Dejima was the fan-shaped artificial island in the bay of Nagasaki where was used as a Dutch

trading port and it was only open gateway to Europe during Japan’s National isolation of Edo

period from 1641 until 1853. At that time, many European technologies and cultures were

introduced here through Dutch.


 

Mount Inasa

It is a 333 meter high mountain in close distance to JR Nagasaki Station. The summit can be reached

by ropeway or car and offers great views over the city. And also, the magnificent night views from

Mount Inasa are ranked among Japan’s three best night views.

 


 

Martyrdom of the 26 Saints of Japan

Nishizaka hill is the most significant Christian Pilgrimage site in Japan. The 26 Martyrs of Japan

were a group of Catholics who were executed by crucifixion on February 5, 1597.Their martyrdom

is especially significant in the history of the Catholic Church in Japan. In 1637, St. Lorenzo Luiz

from Philippines martyred here at Nishizaka hill.

 


 

The museum behind the monument is devoted to the memory of the martyrs and to Christianity in

Japan in general. Its interior is reminiscent of a church with stained-glass windows, making for

atmospheric viewing of the exhibits. On display are artifacts related to Christianity in Japan,

including old documents, statues and jewelry.

 


 

Confucius Shrine

The world’s only Confucian shrine built outside China by Chinese hands. First built in 1893 by

Chinese residents of Nagasaki with the support of the Ch’ing Dynasty government, the shrine

was designed to serve as a place of worship and learning for the Chinese community, and

housed a Confucian sanctuary and primary school. 

 


 

Hashima Coal Mine  /  Gunkan-jima island cruise

Hashima coal mining island is an artificial reclaimed island and the site of Japan’s first major

undersea coal exploitation pioneered by Mitsubishi. Hashima Island is located 3 km southwest of

Takashima. Now Hashima is a ruins called “Gunkanjima”, so called after its resemblance to the

silhouette of a battleship.

Shimabara is located in the Shimabara peninsula, the region spread in the foot of gentle mountain

and facing to calm sea.  Offers various enjoyable things such as Nature, Onsen, Castle town of

Shimabara-city and Christian Pilgrimage sites.

Unzen is a beautiful highland Onsen resort in Shimabara peninsula situated Unzen National

ParkThe first area to be designated as a National Park in Japan and thenthe area has been

developed as Onsen resort for both tourist Japanese and foreigner. Even nowmany tourist

The Japan’s longest foot bath in Obama

 


 
Where to explore
 

Located in Shimabara-city and was built in 1625 by the feudal load Matsukura Shigemasa, who was

regarded as a master of castle building. The castle, which took 7 years to complete, is also known as 

“Moritake Castle”.

 


 

Samurai Houses

Samurai was a term for the military nobility in pre-industrial Japan. The Samurai Houses in

Shimabara along the old Samurai street nearby Shimabara Castle were built in 18th century.

 


 

Samurai Street

The street lined with stone walls and a spring water canal running down the center commemorates

the old samurai section of Shimabara. Three Samurai houses have been restored and opened 

as exhibits.

Guzoni is said to created during the Shimabara Rebellion of 1637. When Christians were fought

under the leadership of Amakusa Shiro, they brought various ingredients such as rice cake, fishes

and vegetables, and made a stew.   This is the origin of Guzoni.

 


 

Obama Chanpon 

It is a local cuisine in Obama Onsen resort, made of noodles, seafood, and vegetables. The feature

of the restaurant in Obama Onsen serving everything from any Japanese style including Susi and

Chanpon. Shrimp are found in abundance along the beaches near the Onsen, and a special soup

is made from them.

Unzen

 

Nita Pass

One of the best scenic spot in Unzen. At any time of the year the natural scenery of Nita Pass 

in Unzen is magnificent. Azaleas, green leaves, brilliant autumnal tints of maples and silver frost

represent each season of the year.

 


 

Unzen Jigoku

Jigoku, means Hell, is the number one attraction of Unzen with a peculiar smell of sulfur emitted

from the springs, and with white smoke rising from the ground over a wide area. This is a striking

reminder that Unzen Volcano is still very much alive.

Dolphins watching cruise

Approximately 300 wild Dolphins live in the sea between the Shimabara Peninsula and Amakusa.

The dolphin watching cruises have become increasingly popular for all ages, especially because

it is possible to see the dolphins so close that you could almost touch them.

The Christian pilgrimage site, registered on UNESCO’s World Heritage Site as Hidden Christian

Sites in the Nagasaki RegionThe battle field of Shimabara Rebellion which was a peasant uprising

Saga-prefecture is located in the northern part of Kyushu and are adjacent to Fukuoka-prefecture

in the east and to Nagasaki-prefecture in the westThe north side faces Genkai Quasi-National

Park with scenic coast line. In the south, the Saga plain that is adjacent to Ariake Sea is

spreading. The capital of the prefecture is Saga–city.

Route 1

Saga-city

Saga-city in Kyushu is the seat of the Saga-prefectural government. Saga is also known as the

place where it has made a great contribution to the Japanese Industrial Revolution. 

 


 

Lunch at Saga or Tara

 

Saga beef

Saga beef is esteemed as one of the best Wagyu beef brands in Japan. The cattle used for our

meats are fattened in adherence to the regulations of the Japan Agriculture Co-operative, and

we use only Japanese black cattle registered with their cattle traceability system.

 


 

Takezaki crab

Takezaki crab is the local specialty of Tara, and is well-known for its rich flavor. Takezaki crabs are

available almost year around. From summer into fall the male crabs are delicious, with the females

and their eggs most delicious during the autumn and winter. You could even try one of each.

 


 

Kashima and Tara

Kashima is located about 60 kilometers southwest of Saga-city. It borders the Ariake Sea to the east

and Nagasaki Prefecture to the southwest. Feature sightseeing spot is Yutoku Inari Shrine and also

Sake brewery visiting is recommended.

 


 

Ochacha Mura Village

Visitors get to taste test green teas and products, see and tour the warehouse factory where green

tea is cultivated and packaged, and leave with a better understanding of the ever-so-popular tea.

You can even experience the process of picking young green leaves for cultivation.

Ureshino Onsen Resort

Ureshino Onsen is a hot spring town in south-western Saga-prefecture. Its clear Onsen waters are

high in sodium bicarbonate and sodium chloride and feel extremely smooth on skin, giving rise to

its popularity as a “Bihada no Yu” ( beautiful skin waters).

 


 

Route 2

 

Yobuko

Fishing industry town famous for Squid and Morning Market called Asaichi, it opens from

7:30 to 12:00, every day at just next to Yobuko Port. The street of 200 m borrowed from the

eaves of the shopping street is named “Asaichi Street”.

 


 

Lunch at Yobuko

 

Fresh Squid

Famous for fresh Squid, transparent in body and firm in texture. The squid has a sweetness that melt

upon the tongue. In the finely crafted style of sashimi known as Ikezukuri, the flesh of still-living

seafood is served.

 


 

Imari

Imari is the porcelain town, has 400years history and is most notable because of Imari porcelain,

which is the European collectors’ name for Japanese porcelain wares made in the town of Arita,

Saga-prefecture.

 


 

Arita

It is known for producing Arita porcelain, one of the traditional handicrafts of Japan. Famous for Arita

yaki which is 400-years old porcelain. The piece is bright, elegant pictures drawn in transparent white

porcelain

 


 

Takeo

The Onsen resort, has 1200 years history. Takeo is located in the western part of Saga-prefecture.

The hot spring temperature is 18 to 52 degrees. Spring quality is smooth with alkaline simple hot

spring.  Romon Gate is the landmark of Takeo Onsen Resort, which was designed by a renowned

architect in the Meiji Era, Kingo Tatsuno, and is at the entrance of the Onsen area.
