Mojiko Retro

Dr. Albert Einstein awarded Nobel Prize in Physic visited Moji in 1922, and he acclaimed that

everything could see were Arts. The exotic district of Mojiko Retro is visited by more than 2 

million tourists a year. Moji-ko Port flourished following its 889 designation as a Special National

Port for exporting coal and other products. 

 

Mitsui Club

It was built by the Mitsui Co., Ltd in 1921 as a reception centre and to provide accommodation for

VIP’s.   Albert Einstein (1879-1955), one of the world’s most famous theoretical physicists, stayed

here during his visit to Japan with his wife in 1922.

 


 

Kaikyo Plaza

The shopping area in the Mojiko Retro district located by the sea. “Full of a romance market which

stir up forgetting contentment” is the direct translation of the concept Kaikyo Plaza is based on. 

The area has a very romantic ambience and evokes feeling of nostalgia and contentment that will 

never be forgotten

 


 

Mojiko Station

It is the only Station building that is designated as an Important National Cultural Property 

together with Tokyo Station. Mojiko Station is a beautiful station built in the Renaissance 

style and modeled on the Termini Station in Italy

 


 

Mojiko Retro Observatory

Situated on the 31st floor of the high-rise apartment building “Retro Hi-Mart”.  The 103 metre-high

observatory offers magnificent views of the Mojiko Retro district, the Kanmon-kyo Bridge over the 

Kanmon Strait, as well as the Shimonoseki area.

 


 

Higashida

Japan’s modern steel industry was started as Yawata steel Works at Higashida district in 1901. 

Since then, the Works greatly contributed to Japan’s industrial modernization until rapid  post war

economic growth. The three sites in Higashida have been registered on UNESCO World Heritage  

as Sites of Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution.

 

Higashida No.1 Blast Furnace

Only the Blast  Furnace in the world which preserved as it was. The birth place where Japan’s

steel industry began in 1901. It contributed greatly to the development of the Japanese steel 

industry and was used until 1972, and has been preserved just as it was.

 


 

First Head Office of the Steel Works  / UNESCO World Heritage

Built in 1899, ahead of production facilities. It is an architectural fusion of Japanese and

European design, a two story red brick building with bilateral symmetry and a central dome

set in a Japanese tile roof.

 


 

Option

 

Kawachi Wisteria Garden is a private garden at the Mountain foot of Sarakura and famous for its

spectacularly presented, large numbers of wisteria flowers. The garden is opened to the public

seasonally during the wisteria season which usually peaks around late April to middle of May.

 


 

Kokura Castle Garden

Kokua Castle Garden made at the former site of lord’s guest house, located next to Kokura Castle.

This garden consists of a Japanese garden and a lord’s house, a building of the style of Japanese

domestic architecture. In this garden, not only can you see Japanese traditional architecture,

but also enjoy the Tea Ceremony at the Experience Zone.

 


 

Konamon Pedestrian tunnel

Only the place in the world !   You can cross the strait on foot.  The Kanmon Strait, separating

Honshu and Kyushu, is a very beautiful and busy waterway with as many as 700 small and 

large ships a day passing through it. the Kanmon Pedestrian Tunnel, which enables people to 

cross on foot.

 


 

Manga Museum and Aru Aru City 

Manga Museum is located next to JR Kokura station. The museum is located on the 6th floor

of Aru Aru City, a multi-floored shopping mall devoted to products and services for anime, manga,

idol culture, and cosplay fans, a kind of Harajuku in miniature.

 

 


 

Hiraodai Karst Plateau & Caves 

One of the three largest karst plateau in Japan. It is located in southe-astern part of Kitakyushu-city

At altitudes between 400 and 600 meters above sea level and stretching 6 km from north to south

and 2 km from east to west.

Where to explore 

 

Mount Sarakura

The height of the mountain is 622 meters from sea level. At the top you are presented with a

magnificent and spectacular view of Kitakyushu. ​In 10 minutes, you can reach the summit 

from the Cable Car Station using the Cable car and the Slope car. 

 


 

Higashida

Kawara Sobe

Kawara soba is a local cuisine which Soba noodles and meat are cooked together on a Kawara

(stone roof tile) and dipped into a special sauce when eating it.

 

Yaki curry

Yaki curry latterly means baked curry and is local cuisine in Moji which is curry with rice topped

with cheese and/or egg heated in oven. The melted cheese and soft-boiled egg combine with the

spicy curry to enhance its flavor even more.

Kitakyushu-city hiking tour

Although probably better known as industrial and environmentally advanced cities,

Kitakyushu-city is also blessed with spectacular & stunning natural feature surrounding

mountain and Seto inland Sea as well as Genkai Sea, and is located in the Seto Inland Sea

National Park, Kitakyushu QuasiNational Park ( Mount Sarakura and Hiraodai Karst Plateau)

and Genkai Quasi-National ParkThe city has developed a vibrant hiking courses to go

along with its geography. We offer abundant hiking opportunities in the beautiful nature of

Kitakyushu-city.  

 


 

Mount Sarakura 

Mount Satakura is a part of Kitakyushu Quasi-National Park and is located in Yahata-higashi.

The height of the mountain is 633 metre from the sea level. The 8 courses have developed from

Mount Sarakura Cable Car Station to the summit of the mountain.

It takes about 120 minutes and form Cable Car Station to the top of the mountain.

Hiraodai Karst Plateau

Hiraodai Karst Plateau is also part of Kitakyushu Quasi-National Park along with Mount Sarakura

and one of the three largest karst plateau in Japan along with the Akiyoshi-dai Plateau and the 

Shikoku Karst.  It is located in southeastern part of Kitakyushu-city. At altitudes between 400 and

600 meters above sea level and stretching 6 km from north to south and 2 km from east to west.  

There are a lot of hiking courses you can enjoy, and best season are spring and autumn. 


 

Mount Komunji  

Mount Komonji is very close to JR Kokura Station and the height is 366 metre from the sea level.

The hiking courses are developed from Adachi-yama forest park to the top of the mountain.

It is very easy hiking and takes about 60 minutes.

From the top, the magnificent view of heart of Kitakyushu-city can be seen.

Eco Town Center 

Eco Project information center that supports the Eco-town.  It introduces initiatives and activities

implemented in Eco-town to encourage people to proactively used the facility for such activities

as environmental study sessions and interaction amongst visitors.


 

Plastic PET Bottle recycling / Nishi-Nippon PET Recycling

PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottles are sorted by municipalities and recycled into pellets and

flakes, which can be used as raw materials for polyester fibers and egg cartons.


 

Melting Furnace  / Sin-Moji Plant 

The collected waste including metals is melted at over 1,700 degree Celsius in the Melting Furnace

and then the melted slag and metals are discharged. The slag is used as raw materials for pavement

and bricks and the metals are re-used for other steel products. The process and technology of the 

Melting Furnace can be learned. 


 

Waste paper recycling / Kyushu Seishi 

Refined waste papers is recycled into toilet papers. Sludge generated during the toilet paper

production process is used to produce a foaming inhibitor used by steel works.


 

Hiagari Sewage water treatment plant 

The sewage come through the sewer pipe is purified in the plant and flow into the sea. There is an

also new technology plant which the electricity is generated using the sludge from sewage. At the

Visitor Center established in 2015, sewage treatment process and technologies can be learned.

Industrial Heritages in Kitakyushu

Kitakyushu-city  is the industrial innovation city where a lot of Japan’s Industries were born

and Japan’s industrial modernization has been achieved. The city presents various Industrial

Onga River Pump Station, UNESCO World Heritage

Built in 1910 on the east bank of the Onga River. It served, and still serves, to deliver industrial

water to Yawata via an 11.4 km pipeline. This supply is integral to the steel production process

and was necessary to cope with the 1st phase expansion of the Imperial Steel Works.

Kawachi Reservoir 

The first-class civil construction heritage that triggered the registration of World Cultural Heritage of

Meiji Japan’s Industrial Revolution.Th e Kawachi Reservoir was constructed for the industrial water

supply to Yawata Steel Works


 

Minami Kawachi-bashi bridge

The only remaining lenticular truss bridge in Japan or lens type truss bridge, located at the south
side of Kawachi Reservoir and it was designed by Hisanori Numata.  This shape and colour really
harmonize with nature and become a symbol of the Iron town Yahata.

 

Higashida No.1 Blast Furnace

The Blast Furnace used to make the pig iron and was where Japan’s steel industry began in 1901.

It contributed greatly to the development of the Japanese steel industry and was used until 1972,

and has been preserved just as it was.

Dedicated railway for Yawata Steel Works 

Connected between Yawata and Tobata.  Construction work took three years, and completed in

1930. The most difficult and hard work was making Miyatayama tunnel with a total length of 1180m

due to suffering from floods. The gates of the Miyatayama tunnel are decorated with stately designs.

The western-style building of Art Deco style architecture which was completed in 1927, and opened
as an employee club of the then-owned Yawata Steel Works. The Hall building received the
Kitakyushu City Architectural Culture Award in 1989.

River Walk Kitakyushu

A large commercial facility along Murasaki river and next to Kokura Castle. It was opened

as part of the Kitakyushu Renaissance Scheme in 2003, and possesses many colorful and

originally-designed buildings. It consists of a specialty store area where you can enjoy

shopping; the commercial zone with a cinema complex; the cultural zone mainly comprising

a theater and an art museum and a media zone which includes the offices of a newspaper

publishing company.

 


 


 


 

Furthermore, an interesting spot is “FOOD PAO”, offers a varied selection of inexpensive restaurants

where you can enjoy lunch or dinner.

The Art Museum exhibits the Idemitsu Collection. 

 

A collection that belonged to  Mr. Idemitsu Sazo, the founder of 

Idemitsu Kosan.

Dalian Friendship Memorial

 

The building based on a German architectural style was 
made to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the 
International Friendship  between Kitakyushu City and
