Unzen Golf Course
Japan’s oldest public golf course. Opened in 1913, the oldest public course in Japan, and
second oldest golf course after the Kobe Golf Club, which opened in 1903. Moreover, Unzen
has been designated as Japan’s first national park in 1934, and the golf course has been
popular among people both Japanese and foreigner as the national park’s main facility.

The course is a hilly course at an elevation of 750m, and at the time of its construction, there were
no machines. This historical, hand-made course, integrated with nature, has small undulations on
the fairway. There is also an authentic short 9 hole course as well. Only 3 minutes by car from the
Onsen town, it is especially cool in the summertime, and can be enjoyed throughout the four seasons
while appreciating nature.

Nita pass
Nita pass is one of the best scenic spot in Unzen. At any time of the year the natural scenery
of Nita Pass in Unzen is magnificent. Azaleas, green leaves, brilliant autumnal tints of maples
and silver frost represent each season of the year.

The ropeway take you slowly from Nita Pass to Mt. Myoken at a highest of 1300 meters, from the
observation point of Mt. Myoken, you can get a 360 degree panorama view which encompasses
not only the Ariake Sea and Amakusa Island but the smoke the crater Mt.Aso.

Unzen is a beautiful highland Onsen Resort situated Unzen National Park. Unzen was

Obama Onsen
Onsen Resort facing to Tachibana bay. Located at western foot of Mount Unzen, and
consist of Shimabara peninsula Onsen Resort long with Unzen Onsen Resort and
Shimabara Onsen Resort. About 30 Hotels and Japanese style accommodation are
standing along the Tachibana bay and there are 3 public baths where visitor can use.

The Japan’s highest radiation calorie of hot spring. (radiation calorie is calculated in hot water
temperature multiplied hot water yield). Some of them reaching 80-100 °C and producing over
15,000 tons of hot water daily. Your own cooking can be enjoyed made by Onsen steam using
local ingredients such as vegetables and fishes.

The Japan’s longest foot bath. Called “ Hot foot 105 ” is the Japan’s longest foot bath in
Obama Onsen Resort, located at the mountain foot of Unzen in Shimabara peninsula.

Unzen Jigoku
Jigoku, means Hell, is the number one attraction of Unzen with a peculiar smell of sulfur emitted
from the springs, and with white smoke rising from the ground over a wide area. This is a striking
reminder that Unzen Volcano is still very much alive.

These springs are highly valued by Japanese even now as according to Buddhist teaching, “If you
live in a bad manner, you cannot go to Paradise, but rather, you will fall into the Hell of agony”.

Unfortunately, this was once put into reality nearly 350 years ago during the time of religious
persecution in Japan. 30 Japanese Christians, failing to renounce their faith met their death
here in the scalding spring of Jigoku.

Unzen Church
The Church is dedicated to Antonio Ishida and others who were martyred in the Unzen jigoku
from 1627 to 1632 and was built in 1982 to commemorate Pope John Paul II’s visit to Nagasaki.
