Located almost in the center of Kyushu, Aso features one of the world’s largest calderas,
measuring 18 km from east to west and 24 km from north to south. It was formed by four
massive volcanic eruptions in ancient times.
The caldera is surrounded by an outer rim with a circumference of approximately 120 km.
At its heart lie the Five Peaks of Mt. Aso, including Mt. Nakadake—an active volcano
where visitors can look directly into the crater from the top
