  Takachiho travel guide

Takachiho-no-Yokagura is a sacred Shinto ritual that has been dedicated to Ujigami-sama (the local guardian deity) by various settlements from November to February since ancient times. For those who cannot attend the full seasonal festivals, four representative episodes are performed nightly from 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the Takachiho Shrine Kagura-den Hall throughout the year.     First three episodes (The dance of Tajikarao, Uzume, Totori) are based on Iwato Mythology. The dance of Goshitai is a dance of a married couple (Izanagi and Izanami) living happily together. It expresses a prayer for a rich harvest, happily married, smooth delivery and pregnancy.   Complete Your Spiritual Night in Takachiho For our Customized Private Tour guests, we are happy to assist with your Takachiho-no-Yokagura ticket reservations.

Takachiho travel guide

  Miyazaki-prefecture

Located south of Aso, Takachiho offers breathtaking natural beauty, best represented by the dynamic Takachiho Gorge. Formed by volcanic activity from Mount Aso, this narrow, V-shaped chasm features dramatic columnar joints sculpted by the Gokase River over thousands of years.   Takachiho is also famous as the cradle of Japanese mythology. Legend has it that the Sun Goddess, Amaterasu, once hid in a local cave here to escape her brother’s pranks, leading the other gods to devise a plan to lure her out and restore light to the world.     Takachiho Gorge A narrow chasm cut through the rock by the Gokase River, the gorge is lined with nearly sheer cliffs of volcanic basalt. These slow-forming columnar joints resemble the scales of a dragon, tracing the twisted paths where the molten stone once flowed and took shape.   Takachiho Gorge boat riding The most recommended activity at Takachiho Gorge is renting a boat to experience the river from the very base of the canyon.
