The dynamic nature of Aso and Takachiho where is spreading around Mount Aso.

Mount Aso is the largest active volcano in Japan, is among the largest in the world and

has a fairly large caldera which is one of the largest caldera in the world, 25 km north-south

and 18 km east-west with a circumference of around 120 km, although sources vary on the

exact distance. The present Aso caldera formed as a result of four huge caldera eruptions

occurring over a range of 90,000 to 300,000 years ago. 

You will discover the large scale of the Dynamic nature which cannot be seen in no other

area in Japan.

Where to explore               

Daikanbo 

The perfect spot view the five peak of Mount AsoDaikanbo literally

means a big observatory peak.  From the observation site, you can

clearly see its conical shape.

Nabegataki Waterfall 

The hidden tourist spot in Kumamoto prefecture, located just outside

Oguni town in Aso region. One of the area’s more well-known

waterfalls. Looking like a mini-Niagara.

Kurokawa Onsen

The most popular Onsen resort in Aso region, located on the  northern

side of  Mount Aso.  Widely known for its open-air baths, it is one of

the best places to enjoy the atmosphere of old town  in Japan.

Transfer to Kumamoto by JR Bullet train from Hakata to Kumamoto station

   38 minutes by Sakura or 28 minutes by Mizuho

Transfer to Aso by Limited express train from Kumamoto to Aso station,

  1 hour and 20 minutes

Exploring north Aso region including the following site by the use of a chartered taxi

Kusasenri-ga-hama 

The beautiful prairie of 785,000 square meter in the crater spreads in

northern part of Mt. Eboshi. A big pond at its center and grazing

horses round about make an idyllic scene.

Mount Aso

The largest active volcano in Japan. Its peak is 1592 m above sea

level. Its caldera is 25 km across north to south and 18 km across

east to west. The caldera has a circumference of around 120 km, 

although sources vary on the exact distance.

Takamori Dengaku-no sato 

Enjoy Aso beef and local cuisines called dengaku. The restaurant

uses the old private house with thatch roof built more than 200

years ago. Bake the meat and local ingredients with charcoal. 

Tourist Tram  /  Minami Aso Rail Way

Enjoy the magnificent scenery of Aso. The Minami Aso railway is a

private railroad offering a very scenic ride from Takamori to 

Nakamatsu in the south east of the caldera.

Day 3  Takachiho

 

Where to explore             

Takachiho Gorge

A narrow chasm cut through the rock by the Gokase River. 

The nearly sheer cliffs lining the gorge are made of slow

forming volcanic basalt columns.

The most recommended activity at Takachiho Gorge.

The spot you can see waterfalls and the columnar shaped

valley together is rare in the world. 

Takachiho is a birth place of Japanese indigenous religion, Shinto. 

 In the story, Amaterasu, the Shinto sun goddess, became so 

outraged by her brother’s cruel pranks that she hid herself in a cave,

refusing to come out and depriving the world of her life-giving light.

Atomic Bomb Museum

The museum exhibits a number of photograph that depict the devastation

caused by atomic bomb showing the lead-up to this tragic day, the history

of the development of nuclear arms and our desire for peace.

Ground Zero

The plutonium atomic bomb exploded about 500m over the central monument

at 11:02 a.m. on August 9, 1945.   The most part of Nagasaki was destroyed,

and a tremendous number of lives were lost. 

Peace Statue

Completed in 1955, ten years after the Atomic bombing. The 9.7 meter high

statue sitting on a 4 meter tall pedestal. The raised arm points to the threat of

nuclear weapons and the out-stretched arm symbolizes peace.

Oura Cathedral  / UNESCO World Heritage

The Cathedral is one of the significant Christian Pilgrimage site in Japan.

Established 1865, this church is officially known as “Oura Cathedral, the

Church of 26 Martyrs.”  Missionary Church of Paris to dedicate prayers to

the 26 saints martyred on Nishizaka hill.

Glover Garden   / UNESCO World Heritage

Glover Garden has nine Western style buildingsThe Glover’s Residence

built in 1863 and is Japan’s  oldest wooden Western–style building has

been registered on UNESCO  World Heritages The elegant scenery of

Nagasaki harbor view from Glover  Garden can be enjoyed.

Mount Inasa

It is a 333 meter high mountain in close distance to JR Nagasaki Station.

The summit can be reached by ropeway or car and offers great views over

the city. And also, the magnificent night views from Mount Inasa are ranked

among Japan’s three best night views.

Gunkan-jima island cruise  / Hashima Coal Mine

Hashima coal mining island is an artificial reclaimed island and the site of

Japan’s first major undersea coal exploitation pioneered by Mitsubishi,  

and is located 3 km southwest of Takashima. The site has been registered

on UNESCO World Heritages. Now Hashima is a ruins called “Gunkanjima”.

Nagasaki Wharf
