The Romanesque-style architecture and the chalky white structure was rebuilt in 1933 by a French missionary priest named Father Garnier using his own money and contributions from local Christians living in the area.

Built in 1865 under the supervision of the French priest Bernard Petitjean. Megane-bashi bridge

  Built over the Nakashima River in 1634, Meganebashi (Spectacles Bridge) is the oldest stone arch bridge in Japan. It was constructed by the Chinese monk Mokusunyoujo, a second –generation monk at Kofukuji Temple. Recognized for its historical and architectural significance, this iconic bridge has been designated as an Important Cultural Property.     Meganebashi is also part of the first group of bridges built over the Nakashima River. This stone, double-arch bridge received the nickname ‘Spectacles Bridge’ because its two arches and their reflection in the water perfectly create the image of a pair of spectacles.

                                                                                                                                           HOME    Geography is a field of science devoted to the study of the lands, features, inhabitants, and phenomena of Earth.  Kitakyushu has unique geographical features, therefore Earth and its human and natural complexities and also how they have changed and come to be can be learned.     Hiraodai karst plateau  One of the three largest in Japan along with the Akiyoshi-dai  Plateau and the Shikoku Karst.  It is located in south-eastern part of Kitakyushu-city. At altitudes between 400 and 600 meters above sea level and stretching 6 km from north to south and 2 km from east to west.     Hiraodai Limestone Caves  There are three limestone Caves in Hiraodai Karst and each cave has different unique feature.    Senbutsu limestone cave Literally means 1,000 Buddha Cave, is the largest of the caves in Hiraodai Last Plateau, extending about 900 m while meandering toward the northeast. The shape of the cave is narrow, narrow ceiling ravine with a maximum width of 10 m and a maximum ceiling height of 15 m.   Mejiro limestone Cave It is the longest cave in Hiraodai Karst, over 2 km in length.  The highlight of this cave is the monolithic ceiling which is a  very unique structure as a limestone caves.   Ojika limestone cave The cave is called footfall of dinosaurs.  It is the very rare cave in Japan; the entrance is vertical pit with 25 meter, when …

  Plastic PET Bottle recycling / Nishi-Nippon PET Recycling PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottles are sorted by  municipalities and recycled into pellets and flakes, which can  be used as raw materials for polyester fibers and egg cartons     Melting Furnace  / Sin-Moji Plant  The collected waste including metals is melted at over 1,700 degree Celsius in the Melting Furnace and then the melted slag and metals are discharged. The slag is used as raw materials for pavement and bricks and the metals are re-used for other steel products. The process and technology of the Melting Furnace can be learned.      Waste paper recycling / Kyushu Seishi  Refined waste papers is recycled into toilet papers.
