  the only one in the world, the Blast Furnace which was actually used

Lunch in Kokura

Kawachi Reservoir 

  The reservoir for supplying water to Yawata Steel Works; the construction

  took 8 years and was completed in 1927.  The concept of the designer

  Hisanori Numata was “Civil engineering is an eternal monument”

Minami Kawachi bridge

  The only remaining lenticular truss bridge in Japan  ( lens type truss bridge)

Onga River Pump Station UNESCO World Heritage

  Built in 1910 on the east bank of the Onga River. It is still used to deliver

  industrial water to Yawata via an 11.4 km pipe line

Architectures and constructions in Kitakyushu-city

Kitakyushu-city is the best place for learning architecture and construction design.

There are a lot of unique construction designed by renowned architects and civil engineers

that were constructed beginning of Japan’s Industrial modernization. The design philosophy 

of designers focused on the future can be learned.

 


 

UNESCO World Heritage / First Head Office of the Steel Works

Built in 1899, ahead of production facilities. It is an architectural

fusion of Japanese and European design, a two story red brick

building with bilateral symmetry and  a central dome set in a

Japanese tile roof. The building  is registered on the UNESCO

World Heritage as Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution Site.


 

Kawachi Reservoir

The first-class civil construction heritage completed in 1927, the

triggered the registration of World Cultural Heritage of Sites of

Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution.  The Kawachi Reservoir was 

constructed for the industrial water supply to Yawata Steel Works.

The dam was constructed at the Okura River and upper stream of

the dam was expanded and making the 7milion cubic metre reservoir.


 

The only remaining lenticular truss bridge in Japan  ( lens type truss
bridge), located at the south side of Kawachi Reservoir and it was
designed by Hisanori Numata and completed in 1926
This shape and color really harmonize with nature and become a 
symbol of the Iron town Yahata.

 

West Japan Industrial Club

Historic Building representing modern Japanese architecture. The

building was constructed in 1911 as the former Matsumoto residence,

and was designed by renown architectural designer Tatsuno Kingo,

whose representative works was JR Tokyo Station.  The building is

designated as a national cultural asset.  This building is now open to

the public, and it is used as a restaurant, party and wedding reception.


 

Sankiro

The largest three-story wooden building used for Ryotei in Kyushu. 

Sankiro was built in 1928 and was the largest three-story wooden

building used for Ryotei in Kyushu, and was a representative building

for the time.


 

Mitsui Club

Built by the Mitsui Co., Ltd in 1921 as a reception centre and to provide

accommodation for VIP’s.  Designed by Shohei Matsuda Albert Einstein

(1879-1955), one of the world’s most famous theoretical  physicists, 

stayed here during his visit to Japan with his wife in 1922.


 

Former Mitsui O.S.K Line Building

This is a wooden 2-storey building consisting of an octagonal observatory 

and vivid orange-colored walls. It was built in 1917 as the Osaka Shosen

Moji Branch Office. At that time, the observatory was used for looking out

over Moji Port, and the building was utilized as a waiting room for 

continental voyages.


 

 

Kurogane Railway

Dedicated Railway for Yawata Steel Works, Connected between Yawata

and Tobata. Construction work took three years, and completed in 1930.

The most difficult and hard work was making Miyatayama tunnel with a

total length of 1180 m due to suffering from floods. The gates of the

Miyatayama tunnel are decorated with stately designs.

STEM Education field / museums and learning facilities

Fukuoka-prefecture including Kitakyushu-city have various kind of Museums and facilities

and a lot of things can be learned. The Kitakyushu-city is the birthplace of the modern

Japanese steel industry which began operation in 1901, and is now the world’s leading

environmental future city after overcoming serious environmental pollution while it contributed

greatly to Japan’s industrial development. Now it is called industrial and environmental city

which is representative of Japan.

 


 

Kitakyushu Manga Museum and Aru Aru City 

The Kitakyushu Manga Museum is located next to JR Kokura station. The museum is located

on the 6th floor of Aru Aru City, a multi-floored shopping mall devoted to products and services

for anime, manga, idol culture, and cosplay fans, a kind of Harajuku in miniature.

 


     

Environmental Museum

The Environmental learning facility which has Environmental learning function, Environmental

information function and Environmental activity function. The Environmental improvement

history of Kitakyushu, Global warming and other various environmental issues can be learned.

 


 

Kitakyushu Eco House

The Eco House proposes an energy-saving lifestyle at home. It is made environmentally friendly,

such as blocking & heat insulation structure and improving ventilation by ingenerating the

arrangement of windows.

 


 

Kitakyushu Museum of Natural History & Human History

The largest scale Museum in Western Japan for Natural history and Human history located

in Higashida district.

 


 

Kyushu Railway Museum

It is a railway theme park organized by JR Kyushu, showing the  history of Kyushu Railways.

Consists of 3 areas; main building, train exhibition hall and mini railroad park. The main building

has diverted from the original Kyushu Railway Headquarters red brick building built in 1891.

 


 

Kitakyushu Firefly Museum

The learning facility for ecology of Firefly.  The activities for protecting fireflies have been continued

for over 30 years by citizens in Kitakyushu-city. The museum was established as a facility that

supports activities related to preservation of the natural environment, learning and research on fireflies

and other waterside creatures and their habitats.

 


 

Environmental Museum of Water

The learning facility of the water environment. You can see and feel the Nature from the view point

of fishes, birds and insects at the experience corner. There are ecology tanks, you can learn about

the river and the environment. And also there is the huge River observation window with 2.3 metre

high and 7.2 metre wide, You can observe River creatures and fishes as well as Seawater fishes.

 


 

Yame Traditional Craft Museum         

Yame is the Centre of Japanese artificial crafts. The Museum was built in 1986 with the purpose of

gathering traditional craft items together and transferring traditional techniques and development of

local industry.

 


 

Fukuoka Citizens’ Disaster Prevention Center   

The Center has been built to enable citizens to actually experience various types of disasters and

obtain information on how to handle these disasters.

 

Plastic PET Bottle recycling

Plastic PET Bottle recycling by Nishi-Nippon PET Recycling.  Based on the “Law for Recycling

of Containers and Packaging,” plastic (PET: polyethylene terephthalate) bottles are sorted by

municipalities and recycled into pellets/flakes, which can be used as raw materials for polyester

fibers, egg cartons.

Water treatment plants and facilities

 

Hiagari Sewage water treatment plant 

The sewage come through the sewer pipe is purified in the plant and flow into the sea. 

There is an also new technology plant which the electricity is generated using the sludge from sewage.

At the Visitor Center established in 2015, sewage treatment process and technologies can be learned.

 

Water Plaza 

The Plant making fresh water from sea water and sewage water established in 2011.
The desalination process and technology can be leared.

 


 

Waste paper recycling in Kitakyushu

Waste paper recycling by Kyushu Seishi.  Refined waste papers is recycled into toilet papers.
Sludge generated during the toilet paper production process is used to produce a foaming inhibitor

used by steel works.

 

Product : Household toilet paper

Raw material : 100 % of waste paper come from offices and household is used 

Production capacity : 25,000 ton per year

Melting Furnace in Kitakyushu

Melting Furnace  / Sin-Moji Plant.  The collected waste including metals is melted at over

1,700 degree Celsius in the Melting Furnace and then the melted slag and metals are

discharged.  The slag is used as raw materials for pavement and bricks and the metals are 

re-used for other steel products. The process and technology of the Melting Furnace can

be learned.

Yaskawa Electric

World-leading motor and industrial robots manufacturing company. Established in Kitakyushu 

in 1915. The robots are heavy duty industrial robots used in welding, packing, assembly,

painting and other activities. Robot manufacturing factory and Yaskawa Innovation Center

NISSAN Motor Kyushu

 

The roots of NISSAN is Tobata Casting funded in Kitakyushu in 1911.
The factory is located in Kanda-cho, Fukuoka Prefecture facing the Suo-nada Sea,

 and Commenced operation started in 1975.

 

Now TEANA, X-TRAIL ROGUE, SERENA and MURANO are being manufactured.  

The process from assembly of the parts to final products can be seen.
