Aso Travel Guide (阿 蘇)

 

Aso region is the most popular tourist destination in Kyushu.

The world’s largest caldera and the active volcano

Where to explore


Mt. Aso

Mount Aso, is the largest active volcano in Japan, and is 
among the largest caldera in the world.

Its peak is 1592 m above sea level, and the caldera is 25 km
across north to south and 18 km across east to west.

Kusasenri-ga-hama 

A beautiful plain of 785,000 square metre in the crater which 
spreads in northern part of Mt. Eboshi that is one of the 
Aso Five Mountains.

Daikanbo 

This is a perfect spot view the five peak of Aso(Aso Gogaku), and
is a Mecca for tourists visiting Aso.  The circumference of the Aso caldera
is about 130 kilometers.
From the observation site, you can clearly see its conical shape.     more

 

Sensui-kyo

A ravine located in a place with an altitude of 900m of
the foot in Mt. Aso-takadake, where a dynamic view
of the Aso valley and northern part of Aso Caldera
can look down under their view.

Issingyo big cherry tree

This 400 year old  tree is located in the caldera of Mt. Aso and 
provide one of the most beautiful cherry blossom spectacles 
in Kyushu.  The best season to see beautiful cherry blossoms 
is at the end of March to in the middle of April.

Aso shrine 

The shrine is extremely popular,its god protecting worshipers 
from traffic accidents, and exorcism.  Aso shrine one of the 
oldest and most prominent shrines in Japan, and was built in 
281 before accession of the 1st Emperor Jinmu.  more

 

Shirakawa suigen 

It is the fountainhead of Shirakawa river that is one of the first

class rivers of Japan. The quantity of water that spouts with the 
sand at the bottom of the pond is approximately 60 tons 
per minute.

Kurokawa Onsen

Kurokawa Onsen is one of the most popular Onsen resort in 
Japan, and is situated on the northern side of Mt. Aso. The 
Onsen is a hidden gem and a real treasure. Many Ryokan 
(Japanse Inn) lie along the steep-sided valley beside Kurokawa, 
some 6 km west of the Yamanami highway. more

 

Nabegataki Waterfall

Located just outside Oguni town in Aso region, is one of the

area’s more well-known waterfalls. Looking like a 
mini-Niagara.

It operates between Tateno and Takamori Station from March to 
late November  on Saturday,  Sunday, and holidays
