We LOVED Kyushu and were so glad we put it into our itinerary. What a beautiful place you live in! The scenery around Aso was spectacular, the hotels were great especially the ones with onsens, we loved the food a highlight being the meal at Obama Onsen. I guess we should have really asked for a guide as well as a driver. Ken was an excellent and safe driver but were all wanting a lot more information than he could tell us. A wonderful trip, and I will be recommending Kyushu to everyone.

Tamaseseri / wooden ball catching festival

Festivals and EventsTamaseseri, a lively New Year’s Festival held on January, at Hakozaki Shrine in Fukuoka-city, including a traditional form of fortune-telling. Several hundred men wearing lion cloths compete on piggy-back in two teams, the “sea” team and the “land” team team, for possession of a wooden ball. If the sea team wins, a bountiful fishing catch is predicted for the year; if the land team wins a rich harvest is predicted.

Chikugo Yoshii Hinadoll Festival

Festivals and EventsHina matsuri, also called Doll’s Festival or Girls’ Day, is a special day in Japan, celebrated each year on 3 March. A platforms covered with a red carpet-material are used to display a set of ornamental hina dolls, representing the Emperor, Empress, attendants, and musicians in traditional court dress of the Heian period. It is an occasion to pray for the well-being and prosperity of girls. It is thought that the festival has its roots in an ancient purification ceremony, in which dolls were floated down the river, taking all of the girls’ bad luck with them. Yoshii-machi, Ukiha-city Hina doll Festival from February 11 through April 3 Main Hina dolls are displayed at Shirakabe Avenue district, where the river is lined by attractive former warehouses, all with traditional wood and white plaster exteriors. The doll displays of Ukiha usually feature two types of dolls: okiage (paper cut-outs covered in cotton and wrapped in fabric) and hakobina (dolls in individual display cases).

Hashima Coal Mine / Gunkan-jima island

Industrial HeritagesHashima coal mining island is an artificial reclaimed island and the site of Japan’s first major undersea coal exploitation (1890) pioneered by Mitsubishi – and host to one of the world’s most extraordinary former mining communities. Hashima Island is located 3 km southwest of Takashima, and it was the success of Takashima that led Mitsubishi to purchase this island – both islands giving access to the same undersea coal deposit. Now Hashima is a ruin called “Gunkanjima”, so called after its resemblance to the silhouette of a battleship.

Hidden Gems in Kyushu, Staff BlogHitoyoshi is located in the northern part of Kumamoto along Kuma-gawa River. Hitoyoshi is a castle town once prosperous as a river port, and boasts the ruins of the Hitoyoshi castle and Hitoyoshi Onsen. The Hitoyoshi Onsen is the collective name for 30-add hot springs including Sagara Onsen, all of which are supplied with hot water from sources around Hitoyoshi Station and in the basin of Kuma-gawa River. The most exiting thing in Hitoyoshi is Kumasawa-kudari that is riding on a boat maneuvered by a master polar down the Kuma-gawa River, one of the three fast streams in Japan.

From there you can see the north side of the caldera and the outer rim of caldera. At Sensuikyo gorge, approximately 50,000 azaleas called Miyama-kirishima bloom all at once, painting the area pink.
