Blessed with Nature
The city is blessed with spectacular & stunning natural feature, about 960,000 people are living
in the area spreding in river basins where surounding Sea and mountains.The coastline belongs
to Seto Inland Sea National Park and Genkai Sea Quasi-National Park and also the city has
Kitakyushu Quasi-National Park.
The hight of the mountain is 622 meters from sea level. At the top you are presented with a
magnificent and spectacular view of Kitakyushu. In 10 minutes, you can reach the summit
from the Cable Car Station using the Cable car and the Slope car.
Hiraodai Karst Plateau & Caves
One of the three largest Karst Plateau in Japan. It is located in southeastern part of Kitakyushu-city.
At altitudes between 400 and 600 meters above sea level and stretching 6 km from north to south
and 2 km from east to west.

Kawachi Wisteria Garden is a private garden at the Mountain foot of Sarakura and famous for its

Uomachi and Kyomachi Ginteigai are the arcade downtown shopping streets connected from
JR Kokura Station. The literal meaning of Gintengai is the Silver roof arcade shopping street
and Uomachi Gintengai is the birth place of Japanese arcade shopping street constructed in 1991.

Manga Museum is located next to JR Kokura station. The museum is located on the 6th floor
of Aru Aru City, a multi-floored shopping mall devoted to products and services for anime, manga,
idol culture, and cosplay fans, a kind of Harajuku in miniature.

Dr. Albert Einstein awarded Nobel Prize in Physic visited Moji in 1922, and he acclaimed
that everything could see were Arts. The exotic district of Mojiko Retro is visited by more
than 2 million tourists a year. Moji-ko Port flourished following its 889 designation as a
Special National Port for exporting coal and other products.
It was built by the Mitsui Co., Ltd in 1921 as a reception centre and to provide accommodation for
VIP’s. Albert Einstein (1879-1955), one of the world’s most famous theoretical physicists, stayed
here during his visit to Japan with his wife in 1922.

Japan’s modern steel industry was started as Yawata steel Works at Higashida district
in 1901. Since then, the Works greatly contributed to Japan’s industrial modernization.
The three sites in Higashida have been registered on UNESCO World Heritage as
Sites of Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution.
Only the Blast Furnace in the world which preserved as it was. The birth place where
Japan’s steel industry began in 1901. It contributed greatly to the development of the
Japanese steel industry and was used until 1972, and has been preserved just as it was.

Built in 1899, ahead of production facilities. It is an architectural fusion of Japanese and
European design, a two story red brick building with bilateral symmetry and a central dome
set in a Japanese tile roof.

Industrial Heritages
The first-class civil construction heritage completed in 1927, the triggered the registration of World
Cultural Heritage of Sites of Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution. The Kawachi Reservoir was
constructed for the industrial water supply to Yawata Steel Works. The dam was constructed at the
Okura River and upper stream of the dam was expanded and making the 7milion cubic metre reservoir.

Built in 1910 on the east bank of the Onga River. It served, and still serves, to deliver industrial
water to Yawata via an 11.4 km pipeline. The site has been registered on the UNESCO World
Heritage, Sites of Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution

Dedicated Railway for Yawata Steel Works. The railway connected between Yawata and Tobata,
construction work took three years, and completed in 1930. The most difficult and hard work was
making Miyatayama tunnel with a total length of 1180 m due to suffering from floods. The gates of
the Miyatayama tunnel are decorated with stately designs.

Japan’s Modern Steel Works history started here. Yawata was a rural village with a small
population of agriculture and fishing industry. And this place was decided in Parliament as
the Japan’s Modern Steel Works construction site in 1897.At that time, there were no
construction machineries, the Steel Works was constructed with human power in just 4 years.

Melting Furnace / Sin-Moji Plant
The collected waste including metals is melted at over 1,700 degree Celsius in the Melting Furnace
and then the melted slag and metals are discharged. The slag is used as raw materials for pavement
and bricks and the metals are re-used for other steel products. The process and technology of the
Melting Furnace can be learned.

Sewage Treatment Center. The process has been developed as a result of the verification testing
of technology for hydrogen creation sourced from wastewater biogas.

The biomass recycling facility that started operations in November 2006.It takes kitchen waste
from the town’s households and restaurants, along with septic tank sludge and raw sewage,
and uses a methane fermentation process to turn it into a biomass that can be used for power
generation. After the fermentation, the digestive fluids are used as liquid fertilizer. Furthermore,
Oki Town was the second in the country to make a zero-waste declaration, which it officially
announced in March 2008 with its Oki town Mottainai Declaration.

Kitakyushu Innovation Gallery Studio
Museum of Industrial Technology, in April 2007, based on this theme of “innovation, ” the Kitakyushu
Innovation Gallery & Studio (KIGS) opened in Yahata, Higashida, where Japan’s mordern steel
industry operation was started. Japan’s Industrial modernization history can be learned here.

The only one in the world, the Blast Furnace which was actually used until 1972, is preserved
as it was. This place is the birth place of Japan’s modern steel industry began in 1901 and It
contributed greatly to the development of the Japanese steel industry.

World-leading motor and industrial robots manufacturing company established in Kitakyushu in
1915. The robots are heavy duty industrial robots used in welding, packing, assembly, painting and
other activities. Robot manufacturing factory and Yaskawa Innovation Center can be visited.

Established in 1991, 100% shareholder of Toyota Motor. Major manufactured car is Lexus, and
annual production volume is 430,000 cars. Assembly line and Inspection line are visited at the

The world’s largest toilet manufacturer established in Kitakyushu in 1917. The company is
well-known in Washlet which is an innovative toilet seat that features an integrated bidet.
The sanitary ware manufacturing factory and TOTO Museum can be visited.

Nippon Steel / Yawata Works
Japan’s first modern steel making company established in Kitakyushu in 1901. Now, becoming
the best steel maker with World-leading capabiities. Process of steel making can be learned to
visit Blast Furnace and Hot rolling mill plants.

Visit Tobata No. 4 Blast Furnace, where more than 12,000 ton melted iron with 1500 degree celsius is produced a day |

The roots of NISSAN is Tobata Casting funded in Kitakyushu in 1911. The factory was commenced
operation in 1975. Now TEANA, X-TRAIL ROGUE, SERENA and MURANO are being manufactured.
The process from assembly of the parts to final products can be seen.

Zero Emission Transportation System
The Electric bus driven by the electricity generated by a solar power generation, therefor no global
warming gases emitted from the bus. Operation of the system is commenced in 2015.

Sankiro
The largest three-story wooden building used for Ryotei in Kyushu. The Ryotei is a type
of luxurious traditional Japanese restaurant Sankiro was built in 1928 and was the largest
three-story wooden building used for Ryotei in Kyushu, and was a representative building
for the time. There were over 1200 square meters of floor space and more than 20 rooms.

Sone Tideland
Sone tideland facing the Seto Inland Sea from Sone, in Kitakyushu-city and is one of the
largest tideland in the Seto Inland Sea ; it is about 5 km offshore with an area of about 517 ha.

The tideland is the home to some 326 species of benthic animals in the tidal flat, including a
handful of endangered species, like the ancient horseshoe crab that has not changed since the
age of dinosaurs. Several endangered birds are seen during the summer, like the Saunders’s
Gulls, Eastern Marsh Harrier, and the Intermediate Egret.
