Sakurajima Island

This travel guide is curated by Japan KYUSHU Tourist to help you make the most of your

journey. Based in Fukuoka, we are a dedicated travel agency specializing exclusively

in the Kyushu region.

Sakurajima is the iconic symbol of Kagoshima, with plumes of smoke and steam rising

almost daily from its active southern peak, Minamidake. Once a true island, it became

physically connected to the Osumi Peninsula during the massive 1914 eruption, when

lava flows filled the channel between them. Today, various scenic observation points

across the volcano are easily accessible via a short, scenic ferry ride.

Nagasaki is one of Japan’s most cosmopolitan cities, with a rich trading history dating back

to the opening of its port in 1571. As a historic gateway to the world, it was the first region

where Christianity took root and later played a pivotal role in Japan’s industrial modernization.

Beyond its scenic charm, the city holds profound historical significance—from the era of the

‘Hidden Christians’ to its poignant legacy as the site of the atomic bombing in WWII.
